Who's Going To Uni?

Recommended Posts

I know, it's quite exciting to be going back to uni, even for old folk like me :-)

Start my postgrad on the 16th Sept at Glasgow Uni, commuting from Edinburgh 3 days a week might not be so much fun though! I don't suppose anyone knows of any travel subsidies/bursaries that can be applied for do they? I have looked everywhere I can think of but most are for overseas study/travel.

Ended up getting a jobbies degree after going straight from school at 17 into a course I hated.

Registered there at the OU with a course picked purely on personal interest - Undergrad International Studies and German. Even though it might never help my career one bit (although I work p/t in Policy/Comms so I'm hoping it will!) I'm actually really buzzed about learning for the sake of learning.

I've been offered a job which, when it gets started, is perfect for Uni. The money's great as well. Only problem is I need to undergo two weeks full time training (Mon-Fri 9-5) starting in October and I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do. Bollocks.

Speak to your uni, they should be able to work something out for you.

History at Stirling, Scott?

Having just finished, if you're an intelligent enough lad, seriously just skip a few lectures. You'll know yourself that you only truly need to be knowledgeable on a few topics for essays/exams, the rest doesn't matter a jot. You can miss three tutorials in a semester as well with no questions asked, so just make sure you don't miss more than one at the back of it.

If the job is that good and will help you out with your rent/studies/drinking funds, just go for it. It's not school, you can do what you like as long as you pass. I gave up on History lectures after first semester aside from the topics which interested me, or I knew I was going to write about. Plus first year is seriously piss easy.

Have to agree, Scott. You'll be fine missing lectures/tutorials in the first couple of weeks. Just try and make friends with someone who will be at the ones you miss and get a copy of their notes. A girl in my group went to three lectures out of a possible 24 for one subject in the first trimester, and she passed no problem.

I can't wait to get back to uni, got lots of ideas for the topic I've chosen to do my dissertation on.

Cheers for the advice, lads. Will probably have a word with someone at the Uni to see if something can be sorted out. I don't mind missing lectures if I have to, but would like to avoid it if possible. Hopefully my employers won't be arseholes about it either.

I had a similar situation but the uni basically just said that it was a full time course and therefore any other commitments should be put after uni related business.

In actual fact you'll come to realise that nobody cares what you do with your time as long as you pass in the end. Also, it'll eventually dawn on you that lectures in first year as the biggest waste of time imaginable.

If worst comes to worst , 99% of lectures are available online at Stirling through succeed and a lot of Lecturers use Listen Again which just records the lecture in time with the slides. I'd talk to your Lecturers though in case they are taking registers.

They don't do registers at lectures in History, unless it's changed. But yeah, the listen again feature will be there if you really, really don't want to miss it, as will the lecture slides.

There's little the uni will do as said above, it's a full-time course after all, but again if you really care you could ask your tutor for pointers on books, websites etc to catch up on the topic. It really won't matter though, you won't even have an exam first semester, you'll do a critical piece and an essay.
