When Fellowship of the Ring first came out I decided not to buy it because I knew in a few months there would be an extended version. When that one came out I was on the point of buying it but decided to switch to DVD instead. Sounds similar to the cheapy USB record players that apparently apply too much force to the stylus and gradually damage your records over time. Saw a study on them a while ago that found they virtually all used the same parts, no matter the price, and all had the same faults.
