When I signed on, I never thought I'd qualify due to savings, the other half's income etc, and only went along to keep the NI contributions going for my future pension. I was therefore more than pleasantly surprised when they told me I was eligible for £70p/w (or whatever it is) because of the tax I'd paid into the system over the previous year. The folk I dealt with were actually really good with me, giving me quite a lenient time possibly because I never turned up in grey jobby-catchers. Of course filling out a form with idealistic garbage can be a pain in the hoop, but worth ~280p/m imo.
