I had forgotten to take a bag out with me, so as I got to the front of the self service queue, I stuck my basket down at the scanner, went over to pick up a bag, and by the time I had got back 3- 5 seconds later, a woman had gone to the scanner where my basket was, and started using it. My polite “Did you not see my basket?” was met with “Naw”, and quickly followed by “I’m using this, that one’s free now, take yer basket over there”.
