As much as some people like to pretend it isn’t, and as much as I probably wish it wasn’t, the case, unfortunately alcohol and socialising are still heavily intertwined. I hate that it’s the case but if you’re going out with friends, the vast majority will be drinking, and it is rubbish if you aren’t, to the point where it’s genuinely verging on preferable not to show up. Sober in amongst drunk people is a miserable place to be.

I went to my work Christmas night out a few years ago without drinking and being around people who are really, really drunk when you aren't is bizarre.  I'm sure I'd have remembered it as a great night but what it does bring home is that drunk people just slur and talk absolute shite, utterly boring shite.

Strangely I've never been that bothered about going to football without drinking - I've often driven to games with mates who've been really pissed but that never bothered me.

Agreed on football, majority of the time I’m driving so rarely drink. The idea of going on a work night out and staying sober is a genuinely dreadful thought, I just wouldn’t go.

It's the repetition that gets me. Being told the same thing half a dozen times by the same person. The nostalgia element is also a very common factor. I could set my watch for when certain people will start...,"mind that time...". They can't remember telling the story, but can repeat it verbatim multiple times.

Doesn't bother me the same if I'm drinking though.

Actually, my "closest" circle of pals, as in the ones I went to school with... Our nights out are starting to get boring because there's never any new or different chat. It's always just "remember when.....".

A wee bit of it is OK but I have really noticed this of late

"Mind when Falkirk weren't a mid table seaside league side?"

Awww, fun times.

Aye, drunk folk are awful to be around when sober, and I find that the social pressure from these folk tends to be a huge barrier to not drinking/going out in the first place.

I agree with Miguel's larger point though. I love drinking. I definitely use it as an emotional analgesic though, as I imagine most people do. The social consequences can be seen in A&E every weekend as well as the various health stats.

It takes a bit of assertiveness to enjoy the sober life. I don’t mind saying to folk that their party/occasion would be a struggle for me and either politely decline but get them a present or whatever or say “I’ll come but only for a short while”.

I’m missing my stepdaughter’s baby shower this weekend for the very sensible reasons of
1. I’m not long in recovery from a recent relapse and have no need to put myself in a “danger” situation
2. Neither of us wants her spending the whole time worrying if I might be drinking
3. Even though I think I could manage not to drink, just being around drunks for several hours then driving home to be on my own is probably not the smartest idea

It takes some getting used to, I haven't drank for years now and my social life is unrecognizable although it would probably have went this way with age by now , it happened much sooner as I was 25 when I chucked it.  I don't mind going to the pub so much, but only for a couple of hours and preferably if there's football or such on. f**k hanging about when everyones on the "sesh" it's brutal and of no enjoyment at all.  I didn't normally drink at falkirk games anyway so that was no big change, scotland games on the other hand are actually quite annoying as most of these tartan army wankers are only there to get pished

That’s nice.

Hope you enjoy the seaside leagues for even longer.

At the risk of " big team found " etc I think the penalty to Rangers chat to be cringy as hell.
Don't get me wrong I dislike Rangers as much as the next person but apart from the one at Dundee the penalties I've seen them get have actually been penalties.
Big team found.

He's not wrong tbf. Scotland games used to always be great for a chuckle in that respect when I attended. Everyone would be totally buzzing when the game kicked off and then we'd go one down and the arguments between Scotland fans would begin.

I'd hate to have been in the crowd sober.

I've never bothered drinking before Scotland home games and flit between drinking and sober at away ones depending on who I'm with, but Austria just there was a bit shit not drinking for most of it. The day of the game's fine as I'm there for the football anyway, but the night before (which is usually good fun) was a struggle.
