falkirkthebigclub
Can anyone remember the anecdote about why Dennis Wise was originally banged up? Something about calling the police and saying (along the lines of) "just shot me a couple of n*ggers, better come & get them". I ask because there's a similar scene in The Deuce & I'm thinking this was a deliberate reference.
Boostin' Kev
The Deuce is a real let down considering the people that created it. Don't get your hopes up if you want something comparable to The Wire, only Sopranos comes close.

Boostin' Kev - The Wire was about 60 episodes or so... and a big part of its genius was the multiple pay offs (large and small) that happened over a long time. The Deuce is 8 episodes in... and I enjoyed every one of them. It's a bit early to start judging it against all time heavyweights like The Wire and The Sopranos yet eh? Edit - couldn't find it without weird background music but here's the reference, badger the witness: Edited November 24, 2017 by BradHorse
BradHorse
Tried to edit my post and spoiler tag it there but I honestly think I'm either too fucking stupid or too fucking high. Or both. Bad form to be talking Deuce spoilers in a Wire thread. If a mod happens to read this can they spoiler tag my post? Genuinely tried to but I appear to be too stupid to do it.

paranoid android
Finally catching up with this after hearing nothing but good things about it - just getting to the end of season one. It's a slow burn, but I'm hooked. Some unimaginable shit has just gone down.
steelmen
Finished it a few weeks ago. What a program, amazing TV. It is definatly in my top 5 series of all time. Clay Davies is the Man SSHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET It just feels so real, never been to Baltimore but it feels like this is what it would be like. Interesting to read that actress playing Kima set up a charity to help the people of Baltimore and the other actors got involved to help. Onto the Shield now.
Dons_1988
This thread has convinced me to watch this again (the 5th time it will be). It really is superb.
Miguel Sanchez
Clay Davis is a dick, with this as his only redeeming feature:

Tamdunk
Clay Davis is one of my all time favourite characters. He's such a dick but you absolutely root for him in those court scenes.
dorlomin
The thing with The Wire is its the easiest thing in the world to make a movie or TV show with a Sauron or a Terminator to fight against. An all consuming baddy who everybody hates. But to create a series of characters who are doing hideous things but for reasons you can empathise with. That the real villain is the system that for most HBO watching Americans makes them well off. It eschews fan service and cheap pay offs for a walk in the shoes of the petty criminals the ones in the rungs above without it becoming poverty porn voyeurism . You can see the system from City Hall, the school and the collapsing manual labouring jobs that led people to these outcomes without glorying in it (with the exception Omar who is kind of a version of Nemisis, the god of retribution for hubris, the audience feels that if the authorities are not bringing justice, other forces are). It brings insight and empathy to a nasty little world and the ineffectual efforts to solve it.

The Golden God
On 06/03/2011 at 22:26, Supras said: Chris Partlow is the worst offender, how is this guy muscle? Physically he isn't intimidating, the performance from the actor was average and the character was just devoid of anything interesting to say or do. Weebay was a far better character, not to mention Snoop. Avon, as mentioned elsewhere. Initially, you think Stringer is the physically intimidating mobster and Avon is the weedy intellectual, then it emerges Stringer is the clever one and Avon is the reckless and stupid one, as well as being not even remotely intimidating.. Chris was quality but Avon Barksdale is one of if not the coolest character in television history and is much smarter than String. Imagine slagging this guy.
paranoid android
The Wire may well be the best telly ever, but... Did everyone totally but the Marlo character/actar? I never really felt the guy had enough presence to be totally convincing, tbh.

I never really felt the guy had enough presence to be totally convincing, tbh. I thought he was pretty good tbh. He was more sociopathic than the other gangsters. In a way he was like a bigger corporation not bothered about downsizing staff, screwing rivals and letting anyone go for the most minor infraction. Gone are the days of Avon organising basketball games, letting Cutty retire or giving money for a gym. The world is getting colder - people going one way and the world another.
Miguel Sanchez
Quality bump there of a Supras post. Stringer the smart one. Wanting Clay Davis whacked Edited June 14, 2020 by Miguel Sanchez
paranoid android
Avon was the alpha in that relationship - Stringer was clever in the wrong ways, and was more intent on becoming a legit businessman - Avon knew he would always be 'a gangster, I suppose'. When Avon gets out of the nick, he's determined to get back his corners that they we're muscled out of on Bell's watch. Stringer was a likeable character, but he was weak. Best character - Bubbles or Omar? Edited June 14, 2020 by paranoid android
