Downfall. Is this Bruno Ganz’s best performance? It’s a fantastic film, and he’s terrific. I’ll follow it up with Wings of Desire (featuring Columbo) for a change of pace.

Edited to add: Alexandra Maria Lara ought to be in this more.

I've not seen much of him admittedly, but that was an incredible performance.

The Party is a cracking later showing from him in a very entertaining movie.

Wathed a couple of slow cinema films for this morning’s class

Kaili Blues 7/10

Set in rural Taiwan, a man searches for his nephew, a musician. The high point is an unbroken 45 minute take of the man’s journey from village to village on a moped, in the back of a pick-up, and then on a boat across a lagoon. Show, metaphysical, beautiful, but not without humours. (Amazon Prime)

Post Tenebras Lux 6/10

Saw a film called Silent Light by this Mexican director (Reygadas) in 2006 when it came out and wondered where he’d got to. He made this, among other things, a story of a wealthy family who move off-grid to a rural valley. Things fall apart, but slowly, and beautifully, with lots of animals gazing mournfully on. There’s a magical realism/folklore aspect when an animated devil turns up that I wasn’t mad keen on. Great to look at but I can’t say I’ll be thinking about it next week. (YouTube)

For, I think the first time, I’ve watched all the Best Picture nominees before the actual Oscar ceremony.

How I’d rate them in order:

2) BlacKkKlansman

We watched it the other night, probably worth watching just for the five minutes at the end.

Watched Green book last night and highly recommend it to anyone, if it was a choice between BlackKKKlansman and Green Book i would prob go for Green book although worth a watch, Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't too bad but i think the film was over hyped though.

Never been in such an eerily silent theatre before
Yeah, I hadn't heard anything about the ending either, so it was completely shocking, almost jarring. The very final image is pretty simple but I don't think the ending would be the same without it.

“If I’m not back in five minutes, just wait longer”

One of the best comedy lines ive ever heard still, just totally unexpected, you could almost believe that Carey made that up himself

So much of that film is sheer class, the scene in the looney bin is unforgettable

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part 8/10

This was every bit as good as the first Lego movie, and better than the Batman and Ninjago iterations. It wasn’t as funny (although there were still jokes every 30 seconds) but it felt far more grown up, even though it was a U. A film which was actually quite surprising in how it played out, and entirely fun throughout the entire running time. There’s a credit’s song which relates how great the credits are, and it’s brilliant. But credit scene fans - once that’s finished there’s nothing more to see. Great voice performances especially by Chris Pratt (you’ll see), TIFFANY HADDISH and Richard Ayoade. (cinema)

A Moment Of Innocence 8/10

Strange and funny Iranian film about a man making a film about the time he, as a youth caught up in the revolution, stabbed a policeman. The actual director did stab a policeman and the policeman also stars. Meta in a thoughtful way. (Vimeo)

Cold Pursuit

Gotta say. I enjoyed this a LOT. Loads of dark and light humour all through it. The final scene was fucking fantastic btw. The baddie comes across as just a self centered arsehole, but they add enough to give layers and let you know that he does care about the people he holds close.

8/10

Alita: Battle Angel - Didn't enjoy this at all. The action sequences redeemed it slightly, but I'm someone who doesn't particularly enjoy action sequences. It's probably just one of those occasions where the type of film simply wasn't to my taste, as I'm aware that other people have enjoyed it. I was cringing at the two-dimensional characters, uninteresting storyline and lazy dialogue which took itself far too seriously. It almost felt like a parody at times. 3.5/10

Kings of the Road 8/10

Going to hit the Wim Wenders films hard as I realised there’s quite a bit there I haven’t seen after watching Alice in the Cities, v similar themes to that one...culture alienation boredom and despair, another road trip movie, this time a travelling cinema projector repair guy picks up some depressed guy in the German countryside and they carry on pootling around from small town to small town in the dying days of small towns still having cinemas. Lol at you having to see someone a) take a shit with full turd shot (could have been faked but I don’t think so) and then someone tugging one out in a soft core porn cinema (might have been faked also but again didn’t look like it). Different culture though innit, so will try not to judge. (BFIplayer)

Capernaum

Saw it tonight at the cinema. One of the best* foreign language films I’ve seen. The story of a boy from Lebanon who sues his parents for giving birth to him and flashbacks to focus on his life up until then. To say it wasn’t a very cheery film would be a gross understatement, but it’s got a vivid sense of realism to it.

9/10

*Nothing has yet rivalled Das Boot, obviously.
