I wasn't too keen on it, but it actually fits the openeing sequence really well.

Indeed it does. On it's own, it's fairly boring. But in that opening credits, it probably helps to make it the best one yet. Awe inspiring stuff.

30 minutes or less - 8/10. Was expecting 6/10 at best, but I really enjoyed it throughout.

Danny McBride is the man. Only film I can think of that he's in which I wasn't keen on was Your Highness, which was pretty mediocre.

Saw some criticism of "The Other Guys" earlier. I liked it; wasn't great throughout but had its moments. Dirty Mike and the Boyz, the Prius, the ending montage with bonuses and ratios of highest to lowest earners exponentially increasing, "aim for the bushes", Mark Wahlberg's ballet dancing and subsequent "I learned tap when I was at college to subversively mock the faggots that like that shit" etc. Steve Coogan wasn't great in it but I laughed at the bit where he's on his laptop and you can hear some sort of dodgy pirate porn going on "THAARRR SHE BLOWS!"

I think/thought The Other Guys was absolutely hilarious. Totally underrated film in my opinion. All of the examples above plus plenty more were brilliant.

"There is a darkness inside of me that wants to get out and wants to walk around. It wants some walking around money and it wants to buy some shoes. It wants to walk up to people say "HEY!...Gator dont play not shit! You hea- you feel me!?"

Him singing with the old guys in the bar, Mark Wahlerg constantly saying he's a peacock and needs to fly, the captain constantly qouting TLC. Brilliant

I would add that Damon Wayans Jr and Rob Riggle (the two rival cops that aren't Sam Jackson and The Rock) are fantastic.

"I hope you like prison food..."

"and penis"

The tuna conversation is also fantastic.

"Good tweet"

Plus the silent fight at the funeral is classic.

"I will rock your body with big nasty hooks and you'll be pissing blood outta your ass"

"Thats horrible"

Watching the Sixth Sense on Film4. It's pretty good, but the fact that popular culture has spoiled the twist for me is a bit annoying.

 You've never watched the Sixth Sense before? And you're annoyed because people have 'given away' the ending of a 13 year old film? Or am I missing something here?

SaltyTON did one a few weeks back.

And as for Sinister I thought it was really good.

Without giving too much away the music that accompanied certain things freaked me the f**k out. It made me really uncomfortable and was absolutely perfect.

Thanks for those. I'm sold now. I'll go check it out.

My dad's mate gets early releases and tickets to screenings for BAFTA.

He was at a screening for 'The Others' and the writer made a special announcement "just to say beforehand, this was written before The Sixth Sense"

Howl's Moving Castle.

I was staying with friends on Monday. I woke up earlier than they did and was rooting through their DVD box and came across this. I have been meaning to watch a Studio Ghibli film for a long time. I have been trying to get into anime for a while. I was actually a bit apprehensive and wasn't actually expecting much. Safe to say the film was excellent. Beautiful and moving. I'll give it a safe 8.5/10 I watched it Japanese (with subtitles) rather than the dub. Oh and the music was great too. ^^

I have now ordered Castle in the Sky, Grave of Fireflies and Only Yesterday. Has anybody here seen Only Yesterday per chance? I'm going to start watching Miyazaki's TV series Future Boy Conan tonight.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986): Solid 9/10 - Magic film. Great fun. If my dog hadn't chewed the DVD to bits I would watch it again and again. I may need to re-invest.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988): 8/10 - Sweet but sad. I think I had myself a bit hyped up for this film and had perhaps read too many spoilers to enjoy this. I wasn't really satisfied with the ending to be honest. I think I might like it more if I give it another watch.

Spirited Away (2001): 8.5/10 - Deserves all the acclaim it has received.

Only Yesterday (1991): 10/10 - I have seen this described as the Ghibli 'hidden gem' on the internet (it was never released on DVD or even VHS in the USA). Slow placed, nostalgic, utterly beautiful animation, a really, really sweet story and film. It may well become one of my personal favorites.

Anyway... it's time to go on amazon and order some more Ghibli films.
