Walking Down The Halbeath Road

Recommended Posts

Anyone starting to think that the club are going a bit over the top with this friendly? They've just released a limited edition whisky to commemorate the match. There's half and half scarves and commemorative t-shirts, hoodies, posters and mugs.

It's great to have such a game as it's something different against a good club with a good following (footballing and size respectively) and the club deserve credit for getting it on, but feel they may be getting a tad carried away.

Aye a wee bit. I can’t make it tomorrow as currently in Ireland visiting family so I’ve not gave it much attention, however I’ve just checked the ticket sales in the Norrie and they’re shockingly bad. If I was back in the toon I’d be there but I do agree it’s a bit OTT. It’s pretty cool but I hope it pays off in the long run in terms of a proper connection, possibility of some player loans etc.

This was never going to sell-out from a Pars perspective. From a monetary point of view, hopefully the nerds and hipsters that follow St Pauli (that didn’t get an away ticket) just decide to jump in to the home end on the day.

I don’t know if they expected 7-9000 fans. Our pre-season friendlies are rarely supported well, regardless of opposition. Only exception was Nipper’s testimonial against Man Utd (sure that was before season began but could be wrong). It’s attracting fans of St Pauli based in the UK, but I think that’s about it. It was very Celtic heavy early on and that definitely put some of my mates off. Shame, because I think it’ll be poorly supported on our part and won’t make the whole thing look as good as it could be.

I don't think it helps that it's our first pre-season game. Ideally you'd have a couple of warm up games against local non-league or lower league opponents first then the sterner tests and more glamorous games come just before the season starts. Tuesday night there for Scotland v Georgia was the last game of last season and here we are a few days later playing this match. No new signings (as yet) to get excited about either.

But overall we've totally over egged it. Merchandise, an interview with Bundesliga commentator Derek Rae, constant reminders on the clubs socials, limited edition whisky... I see they are doing a collection for the "Scottish Refugee Council" which is an admirable thing to do but seems like we're trying a bit too hard to be a mini FCSP. Part of me wonders if there will be an announcement of an official tie in at or after the game.

The strip thing is equally baffling. They've done quite well on the social media side (the post today showing McPake unloading the van and tagging in Errea was well done) but seeing the strip for the first time in a game when they could be selling it before this "glamour tie" seems odd. I get it that if they've only just got them in then it's a tight turn around but releasing even a teaser then having them for sale tomorrow before kick off seems a better plan.

Despite high prices, this will be our best attended friendly since Man Utd came in 2007. That has to be seen as a ‘win’. I really don’t think anyone will look at a crowd of 6-7k for a friendly and think it’s poor.

Agree that we seem to be overhyping it a bit on social media though.

Also, notice we’ve included pics of Paul McGowan in today’s training pictures on Instagram.

I think McGowan will be useful if we can keep him fit. The Paul McGowan we seen last season wasn’t his best, he hadn’t kicked a ball for Dundee due to injury and wasn’t match sharp. We had no availability to bring him in for game time apart from 10-15 mins here and there due to the title chase. Bags of experience.
