Former 49ers & Saints LB Parys Haralson has died aged 37

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Parys Haralson died Monday, the team announced. He was 37.

Haralson played for the Niners from 2006 to 2012.

"The 49ers are heartbroken and shocked by the news of Parys' tragic passing," the team said in a statement. "Parys was a beloved member of our organization that lived life with an extraordinary amount of passion and joy while leaving an indelible mark on everyone he came across. We extend our condolences to Parys' family and loved ones."

The Niners selected Haralson in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL draft with the 140th overall pick out of the University of Tennessee.

"The Tennessee Football family is mourning the sudden loss of VFL Parys Haralson," Tennessee Football wrote in a tweet. "Haralson was a two-time captain for the Vols and finished his career 5th in program history with 21 sacks."

In his seven seasons as an edge rusher in San Francisco's 3-4 defense, Haralson appeared in 86 games, posting 295 tackles, 21.5 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles and 4 passes defended.

Haralson capped off his playing career with two seasons as a member of the New Orleans Saints, to whom he was traded before the 2013 season.

After his retirement, Haralson returned to the Bay Area and worked as the 49ers' director of player engagement. In that role, Haralson was charged with "engaging, educating and empowering players to reach their full potential both on and off the field."

Many players and former teammates took to social media to express condolences following the news of Haralson's death.

R.I.P to my former teammate and Friend Parys Haralson aka P-Town. Praying for his family. 🙏🏾

Haralson's cause of death was not immediately known.

Lions CB Jeff Okudah out for the season with a ruptured Achilles

Jeff Okudah’s second season is over just as soon as it started.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has suffered a ruptured Achilles that will cost him the entire season.

Okudah suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of the Lions’ loss to the 49ers. After the game, head coach Dan Campbell feared that Okudah’s injury could be season-ending.

“We know obviously it’s somewhere around the ankle, could be Achilles,” Campbell said.

It’s a brutal development for the 22-year-old cornerback. Okudah has a good training camp, was developing as a leader in the Lions secondary, and despite giving up a 79-yard touchdown in the season opener had showed some signs of development.

Now, for the second straight season, Okudah will land on the injured reserve list and spend another offseason rehabbing a tough injury. Last year, he dealt with a groin injury that required core surgery in the offseason. Okudah said he believed the injury was one of the best things that could happen to him after a rough rookie year.

“Instead of looking at this like a negative thing, embrace it. I love it,” Okudah told The Daily Stoic podcast this offseason. “I love that I got surgery because now that gives me a chance to improve things that I probably wouldn’t have improved if I didn’t have to get surgery.”

Let’s hope Okudah has the same positive attitude for the many months of rehab again and can come back next summer looking like the player the Lions believe they drafted.

Number 1 WR Tyrell Williams also placed in concussion protocol. Remaining Lions recieving core has 6 NFL starts between them.

Seen highlights of 3 games so far. The 2 teams im following Giants and Dolphins and the ravens v raiders

Dolphins played quite well I thought, their QB nothing fancy but seem to call the right plays at right times. So he knows how to win a game. Defence played well.

Giants looked poor sadly, no improvement. The QB throwing wasnt good and defence looking unsure a lot of time. Cant see this season having any improvement on last.

Ravens v Raiders was a good game, not as good as they made out but very entertaining. The QBs both looked good , there seemed a lot of incompletions and turnovers but I havent seen stats so not sure was that really case or just highlights version.

Ravens look a decent team they will be there or there abouts, I havent watched Raiders for a while so they looked good but not seen enough to comment more than that. They looked 2 big teams in terms of players size. Can be camera angle though but they looked strong. Like they could both bulldoze a few teams over season.

DeMarcus Lawrence with a broken foot in practice. Sucks for the Cowboys, but that's the one Dallas defensive player that had me worried for week 2 because it's likely we'll be playing our back-up RT since Bryan Bulaga is injured as per usual.

No Randy Gregory either who is out with Covid

Yup.

Wasn't particularly impressed with our D on Sunday either. It's getting a lot of hype from the media and fans, which I just can't see any justification for quite yet, so I think there's every possibility Sunday turns into a shootout. But then, I thought that about the thanksgiving game in Dallas in 2017 and we totally smashed them.

I see Derwin James missed practice today with a toe injury. I obviously expect him to play but that’s yet another injury for him. He’s absolutely superb when fully fit

Going by the injury report and how he conducted pre-season, I think Staley is just super-cautious with who exactly he permits to practice. DJ is dangerously close to becoming another Jason Verrett, but there were no concerns at all on Sunday about any of those guys listed on our report besides Bryan Bulaga, so I think it's probable that the staff are just holding out absolutely anybody who has the slightest niggle.

Ekeler was officially a DNP all last week despite being suited up every single day, and he took the start on Sunday and played more than half the snaps, so again, I think LAC now has an uber-cautious staff

The rules the rule but what I ever realised is it counts towards disqualification. The refs believe you guilty if unsportsmanlike conduct twice and your done for the day.

Now bad tackles etc I have no problem with you being ejected under the banner of player safety but some of these taunting calls are borderline but they carry the same punishment? Not for me

^^^This. Imagine you got ejected because you made two brilliant catches and shouted "Yaassss" a bit loud
