JamieT1314
Just about to buy my first car, going to get something around about 2007/8 plate. Looking at focus as cheap option for a year then upgrade after all my crashes are out the way or an audi a3 sline, which I'd probably keep for a few more years and hopefully not write off. What's everyone's thoughts, best to go cheap for first car or is it a false economy and best to just spend a buit more and get something a bit more enjoyable?

A lot depends on your age as insurance is always going to be a factor. If you are fairly young then I would suggest something small for a while to give you a chance to build up a decent NCB. Bit boring and sensible but unfortunately insurance is always going to be a factor in any new drivers choice of car.

Small engine for the insurance and low mileage for reliability and saving money on repairs. Listen, it's your Maw talking!

supermik
Vauxhall are doing a deal to celebrate 10 years of the Corsa. Think it is 0% finance with any deposit that you want and free insurance for over 21’s.

JamieT1314
Yeah and with the age probably need a few repairs over the piece.

JamieT1314
Could get a newer focus for same money as a3. Budget is 3k
die hard doonhamer
Could get a newer focus for same money as a3. Budget is 3k Have you considered saving on money upfront and getting something newer on PCP? You then shouldn't have any repairs to worry about going forward.
welshbairn
What's the mileage on the Ford and the Audi? Sometimes more significant than age. Diesel or petrol? Edited January 20, 2018 by welshbairn

JamieT1314
2007 focus with low mileage and full service history is about 2k, audi is 3k.
JamieT1314
Cars I've been looking at are around 60/70k on the mileage so pretty low for age.
alta-pete
Go focus. As mentioned earlier A3 parts much more expensive and, whatever you’ve been told, in a 10 year old car you will get unlucky at some point and something will break. Something major in a VAG can be uneconomic to fix.

DublinMagyar
My head says focus for the first year then get something nice. What's the best focus to get? I've had 2011 1.6tdci for 4 years now. 50mpg in the city, 70 on motorways.Never had any trouble, I do recommend
