Scottish Independence

Salmond said that the Scottish government would not politicise the games. This is the right thing to do.

So he regrets politicising the Wimbledon final then? And the placing of Scottish National Party advertising boards at football stadiums across the country?..........

I think the fact that the Commonwealth committee wanted blue and white smoke and the Defence Sec stepped in to overrule is a sign that the UK government wanted to make a statement about unionism.

Salmond said that the Scottish government would not politicise the games. This is the right thing to do.

The UK government, by over-ruling the committee, have politicised the games.

More to the point, should the Defence Sec really be getting involved with this? Surely there's more important shit for him to be concerning himself with?

Bit of a laugh though that they couldn't find any red and had to use pink.

Please explain how waving a winners national flag is politicising.

And its only the commonwealth games, which BT demanded because they know that YES would do better than NO out of it.

Your facts ar as unresearched as my not knowing barrowman was Scottish.

Ach. Its all just a smokescreen.

Seriously though, if the UK defence secretary has taken time out of his busy schedule to dictate the colour of the smoke, contradicting the organisers plans then that is pathetic..

Did the red arrows fly a green and yellow pattern over Melbourne in 2006?

No one in Australia pays for the red arrows.

So how did he politicise the Wimbledon final if waving the national flag of the winner is not politicising?

It's politicising when Salmond does it behind David Cameron when there's an upcoming independence referendum.

Why do you think Andy Murray said he "didn't like it" when Salmond waved a Scotland flag if Salmond was merely waving the national flag of the winner? It is, of course, because Murray knew exactly what Salmond was doing - using him for his own benefit.

Judy Murray was also not too happy about it.

Are you sure that is what Murray said.

How does holding a saltire at an occasion where a Scot won a world class event politicise the event? Was it not countered by the eight million union flags being waved in any case?

Looks like it's a straight shootout between thepundit and Mr Bairn for Mr Idiot 2014.

It goin' be close.

ETA: I had printed this quote in another thread, but I think it bears repeating, particularly for someone like thepundit, who has his fingers firmly jammed in his ears:

“For anyone planning to vote No in September, you have to be completely certain, beyond any doubt, that you are comfortable with the direction the UK is headed. You have to accept that the wider UK political landscape is being shaped by the far right, and that the mainstream parties (ostensibly the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats) are being inexorably pulled ever rightwards in the scramble for votes. You have to be comfortable with the marginalisation and victimisation of the poor, with the dismantling of the Welfare State, the widening of wealth inequality between rich and poor, and the continuing erosion of workers rights. You have to accept that nuclear weapons and aircraft carriers are more important to you than education, healthcare and welfare for the elderly and vulnerable in society. You have to accept that, even if you do care about these things, your vote at Westminster will make no difference to the outcome. If you accept all these things unquestioningly; if you can reconcile your personal politics with what awaits a No vote; if you can consider all of these issues and conclude that a Westminster government can deliver the kind of society you believe in; then by all means vote No. But if you sleepwalk into this referendum, without making any effort to consider the case for Yes; if you squander this incredible opportunity to transform our politics, reclaim democracy, and build a society we can once again be proud of; then I can only hope that, when the full calamity of your decision is revealed to you, you can come to terms with your choice.”

I would imagine it was anyone else in the crowd waving a Scotland flag no one would have blinked. But because it was Alex Salmond there's a big hooha about it. Judy Murray looks like she doesn't enjoy much. She's a right torn faced git.

mmmh

The Ministry of Defence insisted it would never allow that the world-famous RAF aerobatic display team to perform in anything other than its celebrated red, white and blue of the Union Flag saying it was a “UK military asset that was there to welcome the Queen”.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/scottish-independence/commonwealth-games-2014-mod-refuses-request-to-let-red-arrows-use-scottish-colours-9626937.html

but wait....

Squadron Leader Dicky Patounas, Red Arrows Team Leader, said: "As the only home nation representing the UK in the tournament, The Red Arrows are proud to fly the flag for England. Lots of us would love to have had the skill to play football for our country, and being a member of The Red Arrows is our version of that honour. Hopefully red and white will prove as good for the England team as they are for us.

Totally busted. Nice find. This is where the naysayers say "Oh who cares about this anyway"

No one in Australia pays for the red arrows.

It's garbage journalism which only serves to wind up the ill-informed and hard of thinking on both sides.

Facts of the issue: No formal request was made to use only blue and white smoke (I understand an informal request was made). The SNP did not attempt to politicise the flypast by requesting blue and white smoke only. The RAF in conjunction with a government official (civil servant) decided not to deviate from the normal trails because the Queen was present. Neither the UK nor Scottish Governments care about this.
