Gaz
The defence 'expert' who spoke to the BBC clearly doesn't realise 10,000m is only about 6.2 miles, not 9.7.
Frankie S
The Russians have form for this sort of thing. KAL Flight 007 was shot down by a Russian fighter jet over Sakhalin in 1983 towards the end of the Cold War. And of course the US have done it too. USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian airliner (Iran Air Flight 655) in 1988. Edited July 17, 2014 by Frankie S

Paco
Ukranian rebels with Russian equipment? Seems to be little other explanation.

placidcasual
Ukranian rebels with Russian equipment? Seems to be little other explanation. Do they have the sort of equipment needed to bring a jet airliner down at it's cruising altitude?
Paco
Do they have the sort of equipment needed to bring a jet airliner down at it's cruising altitude? Who knows. They've show down a few Ukranian planes of late so it'd be easy to add two and two to make 5. Perhaps the missiles come from over the Russian border. Easy to speculate but it seems the area is held by the rebel fighters (e.g. Russia) so it looks like they're 'in control' of the story for now. I can see it being spun that the Ukranian government are to blame. Debris being found from as much as 10km away. Looks, sadly, like it's definitely been shot down and hasn't crashed.
atfccfc
There is a picture of a passport from a poor Dutch woman who was on the flight going about twitter just now. Not going to post it as It is extremely sick especially as families haven't even had contact yet. Very poor taste. RIP to all aboard
THE KING
Aye, I'm seeing the reports that it was shot down as well. This is going to see some serious ramifications surely. no ,theyll laugh it off.
LongTimeLurker
Do they have the sort of equipment needed to bring a jet airliner down at it's cruising altitude? A Ukrainian airforce transport plane was brought down a few days back that was flying a lot higher than conventional shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles could reach, so the likely answer is yes.

Lex
It will be Ukrainian separatists with Russian missiles. Will certainly be interesting to watch the wests reaction over the next few weeks...How much longer are we going to appease Putin for?
Savage Henry
This won't be a surprise. Shooting down an aircraft is generally regarded as the holy grail of "terrorist" attacks. The question is, what will the reaction be? Airport security's going to be hellish these next few weeks.
Waspy
I can't see much change at airport security tbh, no amount of security could have prevented this.

welshbairn
Automatic suspect has to be the "Russian" rebels, but the Ukrainians must have been getting a bit twitchy after Russian threats of vengeance after the Ukrainian artillery shell killing a Russian on the other side of the border incident. Supposedly the rebels wouldn't have missiles that could hit a plane at that altitude.
