Quitongo's Left Peg Posted April 21, 2015 Share Posted April 21, 2015 Being a moron, when I changed my name by Deed Poll to go back to my mother's maiden name I searched on Google and assumed that the site I found was if not an official government agency, at least affiliated and regulated by one. £33 later I got my documentation, and thought no more of it. Then, I stumbled across this article on the Guardian - http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/jun/29/deed-poll-websites-avoid; which makes it clear that these websites have been breaking the rules by not informing you first that you can actually change your name, legally, for free. The most shocking part of the article is the fact that government agencies aren't aware of the rules, and that the free templates etc from the gov.uk sites aren't promoted better. If you ever need to change your name, don't make the same mistake as me and do it yourself for free.
