Fifteen years ago you'd be assuming people were going for edgy irony outside of forums like Stormfront, but now we have New York Post readers openly discussing the racial inferiority of black people on an article about a child accidentally shooting herself, something that happens in America every day with people of all races. Seemingly all to shut down any suggestion that perhaps obsessively carrying loaded weapons in your own home might not be necessary even in the US, and that humans in general will eventually make errors in judgement with regard to weaponry. The rule is that we're usually about a decade behind America with regard to most cultural things, so we're probably not far off regular unveiled comments about the inferiority and subhumanity of non-whites in places like the BBC's Have Your Say. Isn't that something to look forward to. The good news is the trend is in the opposite direction. It’s that these sorts of places are now a “safe space” to debate things with derogatory comments about people. Meanwhile, talking with friends, especially in public, has moved to unsafe for them, as people (their friends or strangers) will call now often them out. The internet comments section has always been the sewer of resort for the hateful and racist, and the bonus is most of the commentators don’t realise how easy it is to connect their keyboard name to their real identity if someone decides to…and that connection will remain for the life of their comments.
ICTChris
I wonder what newspaper comments would've been like in the 1970s or 80s.

I'd like to think you're right. I get the impression they're just refusing to integrate with the majority of good, hard-working BRITTISH! Americans who have hard-working American families and are egging each other on to speak their minds more. Which is great, in that we know who to avoid, but must be unpleasant for the targets of their ire. 1 hour ago, ICTChris said: I wonder what newspaper comments would've been like in the 1970s or 80s. Frothing maniacs had to make the effort to write in to the Letters Page in those days, and were subject to disgraceful woke cancellation by editors (in other words, it wasn't published) if their bigotry was considered "a bit strong". Wanting to deport furriners would be OK, much like it's becoming again now. Predictions of racial genocide, again OK (especially if Enoch Powell was mentioned). Actual calls to murder people based on their ethnicity? Possibly actionable if anyone dies; best play it safe.

Don't forget to factor in the inclination of the paper and the area/country. The people commenting on stuff in the Sun in the 70's would have differing views than those in the New York Times or the Mobile (Alabama) Register.
101
Mass shooting in Baltimore today taking the total north of 530. However slightly more comical, man shoots grandchild in attempt to get wedding started with a bang. The child will be okay which is the main thing however his granda is now in the jail. https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/04/us/wedding-shooting-nebraska The lesson I took from this is, if you want gun fire at your wedding, use blanks.

Bad lesson, he was using a homemade blank. Gun was an 1860 Snubbie that was converted to use 45 Colt, a black powder cartridge. He had loaded his own blank, filling the brass with black powder after priming it, and then crimped and glued the end. Apparently he didn’t point the gun in a safe direction, discharged it, and the 26-28 grains of black powder pushed the wad of glue at sufficient velocity to strike and wound his grandson. Brandon Lee was killed by a blank too. The gas from a blank, and any wadding, is quite dangerous, so proper gun discipline/handling is required, even when firing blanks. He also should remember rule number one of gun safety, “never point a gun at something you aren’t willing to destroy/shoot”.

Who'd have thunk waving around a gun with homemade ammunition in front of children at a wedding could be risky?

Similarly the actor Jon-Erik Hexum who, on set, held a gun to his own head and pulled the trigger. It contained a blank but that was still enough to kill him. No judges on the weekend, so why turn yourself in when you can’t get bonded out? It’s not like you killed someone…

TxRover
Poland One team in the Breitling Race in the U.S. crash in flames after hitting electrical lines in Texas. However, now that one of the pilots has been interviewed by the NTSB and the FAA, they were flying relatively low when they heard gunfire and decided to proactively land due to worries they were being mistaken as a Chinese spy balloon. During the landing, the hydrogen balloon caught fire on power lines. https://www.krqe.com/news/balloon-fiesta/new-video-shows-poland-gas-balloon-team-crash-into-powerline-in-texas/ https://www.fox4news.com/news/sport-balloon-pilot-says-gunfire-over-north-texas-shot-him-down

djchapsticks
Maine is already a place that gives me the heebie jeebies. Maybe it's Stephen King's books, maybe it's the fact when flying over it, it appears to be about 75% forest and nothing good happens in forests. Maybe it's both. An active shooter hardly eases up my negative stereotype of the place though.
101
Just the 22 shot dead up to 60 other injured, been a while since they had anything more than a wee rampage. No doubt they will be trying thoughts and prayers to see if that can sort this out. Edited October 26, 2023 by 101
