Rather than being a socialist state doling out goodies to all and sundry it should aspire to being a wealth producing nation with low taxes

What's unaspirational about paying sensible taxes if it results in a better, happier country: one that builds schools, encourages learning, replenishes our libraries, cherishes the health of our loved ones, or makes sure our old folk are treated with respect?

I mean, that's what taxes should do, right?

Of course, maybe you've forgotten that. Maybe you think taxes should be spent the way they are by Westminster – on writing off £12bn of wasted PPE spending, or on spending £37bn on track and trace with 'no discernible benefit', or laying out £13bn on failed defence procurement, or even ponying up £100m on frivolous challenges to disabled benefits claimants.

I mean, yeah, if taxes were to go on that, fair enough. I'd like to think Scotland will aspire to better, though.

He's already explained that more millionaires = more tax. More tax = more money for people at the lowest end of society, somehow.

He's also explained previously that we have to keep cutting taxes, as people with money just won't pay them unless we keep cutting to win the global race to the bottom.

It's almost like he just parrots contrarian shite in order to get replies, and doesn't actually believe any of it. Crazy.

I reckon he's a security guard and no-one told him the factory shut 18 months ago.  It would explain the Email volume.

It’s only £900k since Friday.

Thankfully, the Scottish Government won't be paying it out after independence. We'd have no money left!

lol.

As more and more people in Scotland accept the realities of what's unfolding with Truss & Kwarteng, an independent Scotland is looking ever more likely. What Carlos Fuentes said about Mexico's change in direction in the 90s seems to fit Scotland as well - "The road will be rocky, but the stones on the path can well become the masonry of the future". Mind you, building for the future would seem to be alien to the current UK that seems hell-bent on tearing the whole place down.

How did it turn out for Mexico? I fear that's where we're heading if you lot get your way.

You'll be content in your poverty though, just so long as you can GIRU the English.

He must have a crystal ball if he can tell what an independent Scotland's deficit (if it has any) will be.

It's a quote from a Lib Dem Spectator journalist.

That says it all.

If we have a deficit? Are you seriously that much of a fool or that disingenuous?

A Brexiter pretending they give a single shiny shite about the economics of leaving a union (rather than just giving a GIRU up Johnny Foreigner). Now that’s entertainment.

No need to be rude.

No credible statistician or economist would ever predict exactly what an independent Scotland's fiscal position will be. Only Britnat mouthpieces and their mahogany napper followers take what's currently shown in GERs and try to apply that to iScotland.

But for your education, UK GOVS own figures show Scotland ran a fiscal surplus for much of the 20thC and into the 21st.

This is a wealthy, wealthy country.

I'm always surprised at the number of times anyone suggests Scotland takes a different path as an independent country the knee-jerk response from some people always seems to be that it would result in poverty (ironic, given the UK at the moment), and that it's somehow a GIRU to the English people.
