Newspapers may not win folk over but they can have strong role in reinforcing views (and prejudices).  The likes of the Mail, Express and Scotsman will rarely if ever offer even a neutral view about the SNP or the Independence issue.

Should be kept in mind that this particular discovery well was completed in Sept 2016 (started that July)  i.e. 6 months ago (not sure if there's a 6 month confidentiality limit before you can announce these things?).  

That said, the project team would have had to put a pretty damn good application to the Oil & Gas Authority (UK govt dept) to approve it well in advance of drilling (it's the OGA's job to go through the detail and then give permission to make sure that recovery is maximised), hence the govenment would have known all about the volume / risk assessments well in advance.

In summary: Probably knowledge that there was big potential there pre-referendum but the resource was only proven last year.

Nearly all my family work at Faslane, pretty much all of them voted Yes despite risks to their jobs.

I do think that the skilled jobs at Faslane could be put to better use - wind turbines, trams whatever but there is a certain Eastern Bloc mentality about pouring endless amounts of dosh into something just to create jobs. The Soviets had shoe mountains apparently. We've got WMDs...

It's a weird one. We're supposed to be all protective about Trident jobs, but actively supposed to want others (e.g. NHS managers) to lose theirs.

Even if it cost 10,000 jobs at faslane to be rid of nuclear weapons in Scotland then id still vote for it. An abomination can never be justified by jobs.
The fact remains besides around 100 specialist nuclear jobs nothing like 500 jobs are reliant on Faslane being there. A Scottish defence force base at Faslane would feasibly create far more jobs than trident ever would.
Creating the infrastructure of civil service for Scotland would create far more jobs than trident or the union ever would. We can staff our own foreign office, embassies, consulates, tax office, dvla, coast guard/fisheries which actually patrol scottish waters, MOD all of these departments and more.
Dont come on here and try play the moral high ground in defence of a union that has fucking destroyed the Scottish job market.

burgeoning public sector = the same as every western democratic country in the world.  More people, more need, more taxes, more infrastructure.
