Britain being in a two year limbo with a governing Tory party engaged in an internal civil war with itself over Europe is precisely the time to call a referendum, if that's the strategy that you are going to persist with. The conditions to hold one are not going to steadily improve from that - not least given that the SNP will eventually run out of steam and popularity in government.

Either hold a referendum in the above circumstances; prepare an election manifesto for independence by vote of parliament if the Tories deny a referendum; or dial back to the long but surefire winner of seizing more powers for Holyrood at each and every election. Those are the only three credible options available.

Time for Indy Ref 2. We will most likely end up a financial basket case, but UK plc is heading the same way. Might as well do it under our own shite.

Why will an independent Scotland most likely end up a financial basket case?

Usually the ones telling us we'll be a financial basket case are the ones trying to keep us in the union.

That has to have you asking questions, especially if you cast your eyes around Europe and see all these nations, smaller than us, lacking our resources, doing so well – and with their people so happy.

I'd vote for indy tomorrow but everything points to yes losing. It's not a particularly nice way of viewing things but biding time while the mostly unsympathetic elderly die off is probably just as effective at moving the vote as any number of social democratic initiatives of the SNP.

That strategy is entirely dependent on Yes having a constant majority in the Scottish Parliament. Which it might not even have after the next Holyrood election.

Based on what? What has you so convinced that Scotland would run itself just as poorly as the UK are?

Is it the high spending? Because other countries in the world spend more than we do per head and they're not financial basket cases at all. That's because they have full management of the resources close to home. There's no reason that things would need to be just as bad or worse for Scotland outside the influence of London.

If Brexit didn’t happen then you’d actually have a point, given the SNP’s long-term stint in government. But that has completely overwhelmed any judgment of the SG’s record right now. What’s more, the Tory Britnat surge in the last vote will now be undone by their truly shambolic state and wildly unpopular pro-Brexit stance. Ruth will be wishing that she’d taken 36 months maternity leave instead as her act will be buried by the time of that election.

Yoon voters will split themselves inefficiently between Labour and the stories while any Yes dissenters to the SNP will flow into the Greens and boost either party on the list anyway. The next election remains the SNP’s to lose and there’s no sign of that happening.

Sturgeon does need to achieve some sort of progress on the independence cause during her probable decade of power though as those conditions won’t last too much longer.

Jesus what do we have to do to prise Ian Murray out of that seat

Edit: projections based on 100 people subsample, so bollocks.

Ian Murray helped save Heart of Midlothian from going the way of Third Lanark or old Rangers

He can drown kittens and he’s still one of the good guys as far as I’m concerned

Other people may have different opinions.

But I’m not a cat person

Imagine c***s in Scotland saying 'Still Naw' after the utter clusterfuck of Brexit. Ingrained surfeit of servility.

I know these guys.

It will not amaze you how thick they are and which team they support

Why does it need to be estimated???????? Actual crime, recorded crime and now estimated crime. Pish!!!!

It includes an estimate of crime that goes unreported.  It's something gammon-faced yoons have been long calling for.

So we are looking at a graph of 3 estimates, Lower Estimate. Best Estimate and Upper estimate and nothing actually factual. You have no idea how crime is recorded and the steps being taken to avoid recording it and this can easily equate to the reduction in officers who are actually on the street.  Rather than have an officer call on a victim, the victim is asked to phone in the crime, which costs the victim, or go along to the office if they can find one open.
