Only his third singles match since October 2020 and only appearance at Wimbledon was a 1st round loss. Lex Posted June 9, 2023 Share Posted June 9, 2023 Mens semi finals today. Could be a generational changing of the guard match up first with Alcaraz playing Djokovic. The youngster is certainly the better player at the moment, but Djokovic is Djokovic and he's still more than capable of out competing him and beating him. Ruud will be the favourite to make his second French open final in a row in the latter match. Then the youngster starts toiling physically and mentally in the second set and Novak wins it 6-1. Looking like a retirement from the Spaniard might be coming. Lex Posted June 11, 2023 Share Posted June 11, 2023 And Djokovic beats Casper Ruud in the final in straight sets to chalk up slam number 23, never in doubt. In terms of number of majors won he’s now out in front as the greatest of all time. That was another routine slam where he wasn’t really tested, dropped two sets all tournament and wasn’t taken to a fifth set once. Clay isn’t even his surface for goodness sake. Unless there’s a major upset I expect Wimbledon to be much the same. He’s halfway to the grand slam and he could be on 25 by the end of the year. 30 slams well within reach, if he fancies it. Loki Posted June 11, 2023 Share Posted June 11, 2023 The only thing these younger guys lack is the experience of playing against the utter brilliance of Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. Novak has 100 matches against fellow grand masters in which he has seen every point possible, every defensive shot possible, learned when to buckle down mentally, when to let points go, when to rack up the pressure. Alcaraz, Rune and Ruud only learn this in matches against Novak. Alcaraz thought he was going to take his Uber aggressive style and hit through him and Novak had the youngster cramping. He is just phenomenal. Andy Roddick famously said that Novak takes the opponents legs and then takes their soul. He’s lost six finals - Roger, Rafa (x2), Murray, Wawrinka and Medvedev. He was injured in 2016 and had the easiest run to the final including two retirements and a walk over. Since then he lost to Wawrinka in round 4 in 2019, the infamous DQ in 2020, surprisingly lost to Medvedev in the final in 2021 and got banned from entering the country for being an anti-vax nut in 2022. He’ getting allowed back in for 2023 and he’ll be favourite again. He negated the 150 points dropped from Stuttgart last year by winning Surbiton so only lost 25 points. With a further 125 up in Nottingham this week with a similar strength field, he could be sitting in around 34, 35 before Queens starts. With Nadal going down 122 ranking places from Monday that is one less person that would be in the seedings.
