Eednud
21 minutes ago, lichtie23 said: What’s the reason for his arrest this morning? What happens next for Novak Djokovic? As was said earlier today, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke could still cancel Novak Djokovic's visa. Immigration lawyer John Findley told ABC News this could happen if the tennis star was found to have provided false information on his visa application. "The Immigration Act is a complicated act, and there are quite a few cancellation powers available to the government, to the Immigration Department," he said, "One of those powers relates to an application that contained false information. That power still remains open to the minister (Alex Hawke), if it's found Mr Djokovic provided false information. "If the visa is cancelled under those conditions, Mr Djokovic would be barred from entering Australia for three years."
vikingTON
Australia really is an absolute nick of a country. Whether you like Djokovic or not and regardless of his 'recovery' status, someone's right to enter a country should not be getting tossed around the place in the public domain just to fit with the grubby election year politics of the host state.

GiGi
At this point it might even be funnier if he gets in and plays. The crowds are going to eviscerate him.
Left Back
According to the BBC article I just read the reason he won is that his visa was cancelled too early. He was supposed to have to until 8:30 to respond but his visa was cancelled at 7:40 so it was a "procedural" error y border force. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-59932430

Detournement
The transcript of the interview is damning for the colonists. They were clearly trying to trick ND into agreeing to cancel his visa while denying him any communications or legal advice. Throwing him into detention also seems to have been a gamble that he would instead just leave.

What are you greeting about? He won the court case because he followed all their idiotic rules and the Australian government couldn't go four hours without breaking the law. Hammerafc
Looks like they haven't said they didn't have grounds to cancel it but due process wasn't followed as he wasn't given the required amount of time to respond. They may still pull the plug on him tomorrow but either way this has been extremely messy. The AO will hope he plays, viewing numbers will be through the roof.

Quite why they thought a global superstar and national icon would go down quite so easily as all the penniless Burmese they ship off to prison islands every year is a mystery.
Loki
The worst thing is we don’t even have an answer today. Should be decided tomorrow. Alex Hawke released a statement saying they are considering cancelling his visa still. A further delay means less days for Djokovic to appeal be cleared in time for Monday or Tuesday. As he’s champion he would normally headline the Monday night with Womens champion headlining the Tuesday night.

They agreed to let him wait till 8.30 am to phone Tennis Australia when someone was awake, then cancelled his visa at 7.30. The Government conceded the case rather than the Judge deciding in their favour.
welshbairn
Apparently it was Djokovic's Dad telling the hacks that he'd been arrested, who didn't bother checking. https://thepavlovictoday.com/an-australian-national-sport-is-to-hate-novak-djokovics-father-shares-in-the-pavlovic-today-exclusive-interview/ P.S. Ginaro
So if they'd done it fairly and held him for another hour or so at the airport, would anything have changed had they got his lawyers or TA on the phone? His brother sounds a bit more sane, wisely praising Australian justice while the immigration minister still has the power to deport him. P.S. Djordje said: “This press conference is adjourned thank you for attention.” Edited January 10, 2022 by welshbairn
