Salvo Montalbano
Said this several times but surely it's only called Sports Personality of the Year since it wouldn't be able to get called Sportsman or the Year or Sportsman or Woman of the Year since that just sounds wrong? Personality has nowt to do with it or years with great sporting success wouldn't be any harder to win than lean years where there were slim pickings. Plus Niger Mansell, Steve Davis and Damon Hill are all previous winners aren't they? Personality has never been included as a criteria for determining the winner.
Bully Wee Villa
Correct.Unbelievably tedious that people bring up the "he hasn't got a personality!" nonsense every single year, and, presumably, think they are being original and edgy when they do so.
dogmc
Innocent until proven guilty. What he achieved is unbelievable Im not disagreeing with you just pointing out that the wider public doesn't necessarily see innocence until proven guilty. They see smoke means fire and its a public vote. Many will see his results as you said...unbelievable. That might not be fair but its understandable that people are cynical about athletics especially those who were trundling along below world class then suddenly are unbeatable. Fwiw id vote murray cos im biased towards a scot winning and between a sport which is based on speed and endurance versus a sport based on endurance speed skill and technique id favour the latter. Its personal preferences i suppose but its entirely valid to celebrate farahs achievements. Hes undoubtedly Britain's greatest ever track n field athlete.
dogmc
Actually if there is a glaring omission on the list its Jamie murray.
Loki
J Murray, Froome and Frampton should all be included. There is some pish to make it to the 16.
TheScarf
Some of these nominees are box-tickers. For example, there probably has to be a set number of English men and women in it. Hence the Vardy nomination. His nomination should be encompassed by Leicester winning the team award.
Co.Down Hibee
If a team from the championship won the FA cup after a wait of 114 years they@d be in the running for the team award,....

Mark Connolly
Disagree on some of the chat about Farah - he's a BBC darling, and they'd fucking love to justify the huge amount they spend on athletics by having him win.

Mark Connolly
Just now, ecto said: most years Mo would be a "shoe in", but this is no ordinary year, but give the anti-BBC nonsense a rest It's not anti-BBC in the slightest. It's anti-athletics.
dogmc
Steady, mate Two equastrians on list whilst omitting a Davis Cup stalwart no.1 in world n slam winner?? Clearly Jamie Murray should be on list given some of the numpties in there
dogmc
It's not anti-BBC in the slightest. It's anti-athletics. Indeed and in an extraordinary year some of the picks for the shortlist are plain daft. Equestrianism ffs?? Plenty of great sportspeople ignored in order to box tick some utter middle class non sports. Still worth saying that spoty is a fairly nauseating bbc back clapping fest. Murray should be it by a mile for combo of achievements ranking Olympic gold stamina skill n techniques required against some opponents who are best ever in his sport / obvious drug cheats.
Newbornbairn
How the f**k can you get nominated for SPOTY when your big achievement is not falling off a horse?

The anti Murray / scottish vitriol on the bbc website comments was quite something last year. My favourites were the roasters demanding Hamilton get the award cos he was so much patriotic....ignoring the fact Hamilton lives abroad to avoid paying tax.
