Greetings, looking for a bit of advice. I've got a load of pretty good 7" singles I'm looking to punt. Whats the best way to do it? ebay? or take them down the local record shop (Grouchos) also, anybody know of any decent sites that can give you a valuation on each record, I found one, but it was a pain in the arse. Any top tips or advice much appreciated. cheers.

Discogs or eBay.

Get acquainted with the grading system - Record Collector or Goldmine. Use RC for eBay. It's the Goldmine system for Discogs. A picture or 2 goes down well if using eBay. Also get proper mailers and stiffeners for posting (covers33 are good for this).

Discogs is quick and easy for listing stuff. eBay can be a fiddly ballache for listing however the app is pretty efficient.

Planning on going to Grouchos at some point this week. Off for 2 weeks holiday from work and I was thinking about the record fair in Edinburgh in just under 2 weeks time, but a trip to Grouchos is definitely happening.

Is there anything in particular that they specialise in?

Ordered a few albums from Amazon this morning for convenience - its nigh on impossible to pick up Milk Carton Kids vinyl or Lindi Ortega in shops - but I wouldn't mind getting hold of some late 80s/early to mid 90s American alt stuff. Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Pixies etc. A lot of the smaller record fairs don't really cater to that kind of stuff. Would also love to pick up some Stereolab vinyl too.

Got a nice live buena vista social club album yesterday. Satisfying textures and booklet.

I can't help but think of Half Man Half Biscuit whenever that album is mentioned...

She stayed with me until she moved to Notting Hill
She said it was the place she needs to be
Where the cocaine is fair trade, and frequently displayed
Is the Buena Vista Social Club CD

Bigmouth - stay away from the record shops, as they'll give you buttons. eBay if you're wanting shot of them quick and not too fussed how much you make. Haven't tried Discogs for selling, but it seems like you'll generally get more there, but it might take longer?

Mighty Meadow made out like a bandit getting all that for £11

At the moment, I just have one of those Crossley portable players which is okay but the sound would be far better with a system that has bigger speakers. I'm looking to upgrade to something better (with a budget of £150-£250) any suggestions?

It depends on what you have as your stereo set-up.

£250 takes you into Project territory. If you have a stand alone separates system then you can't go wrong with Project, but you'll be limited to the quality of your poorest component so bear in mind that a good turntable played through a poor amp or poor speakers won't be giving you the best quality sound.

If you want/need a new amp (with it's own phono stage to save costs), turntable and speakers then double your budget to £500 and go to Richer Sounds. You'll get a decent set up (speakers, amp and turntable) for £500. Marantz amp, Project turntable and I can't remember the brand of speakers (somebody on another forum I use asked for a similar set-up)

So my trip to Dundee.

Grouchos don't really stock my kind of stuff. Was able to get a couple of albums - a Souther/Hillman/Fury album and Ten Pole Tudor - but whilst they carry a lot of stock, much of it just wasn't for me. Would have picked up some Springsteen but I couldn't find anything I was after. Same with Neil Young. And they didnt really have much in the way of Orange Juice or similar bands of that era.

Assai in Broughty Ferry however would be dangerous if I lived closer. It's absolutely everything a record store should be. They carried albums that I've struggled to get even in Mono - had I needed copies then I could have bought Case/Lang/Veirs and Karl Blau off the shelf and they had some gems like Margo Price in stock. I bought Alice In Chains Unplugged (had thought about ordering from Amazon but decided against it and was shocked to find it sitting there for sale), Belly, Teenage Fanclub, Feist and Lemonheads. I could have done most of my performance bonus without really trying hard - I only held off because I've got some albums on order from Amazon and I'll be paying the bill when the credit card statement comes in (Milk Carton Kids, Sara Watkins, Amanda Shires).

Assai is a fantastic shop. Easily in the top 3 record shops in Scotland. I really can't choose between Coda in Edinburgh (they tend to stock some great Americana), Mono (handiest for me as it's in Glasgow) or Assai. There's nothing between the 3 of them. I can see me saving up and making 3 or 4 trips per year to Assai to tan my wages, either when the Sons are playing United or when the Clan are playing the Stars.

Nice.

Im heading to Dundee on Sunday for an overnight stay, planning on going to Grouchos, but maybe see if I can make the trip to Assai as well now!

Played er all the albums I bought last night. Unreal. My record player actually cut out while on "Creeping Death" which was rather strange. Listening to Ride the lightning while actually seeing lightning outside early AM, quite pished was also pretty cool.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll wait a bit longer and spend out on the more expensive set up. I had a look at the Project turntables and Marantz amps online and I think that's what I'll go for.

Keep an eye out for any deals Richer Sounds may have. Bought a few things from them and every time I've had decent advice. Their prices are fair too.

Means buying from Glasgow or Edinburgh but worth it. Very good to deal with.

Cool, I'm going to be in Glasgow this weekend so I'll do a bit of window shopping.
