Would have been nice if Theresa May had explicitly ruled out forced repatriation of EU citizens living here but she didn't.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.  It's hyperbole from the savage right that actually wants this to occur.

Teresa May speaking live now.

Article 50 not to be invoked before the end of this year.

No general election either.

What a fucking joke.  Tory Manifesto promise, huge prolonged campaign, decision taken, now to be completely ignored.

Other EU leaders will be rightly furious.  Any chance of a near amicable settlement drifting further away.

Don't implement Brexit, popularity plummets.  Implement Brexit, popularity plummets.  It's impossible to govern in those circumstances.

My point is not about the Tories anyway, it's about the next leader.  He or she is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Why on earth would the popularity of a Tory leader "plummet" for implementing Brexit, given that over 17 million chumps voted for it - 52% of a very large electorate - when the current Tory government slithered home with just 37% of the vote? Particularly given that there is a huge overlap between Eurosceptics and Tory voters in the first place?

Because most of those chumps had no idea what they were voting for, and when the reality of this nonsense becomes evident (when they can't just pop off to Magaluf and whizz through immigration), they're going to hold the current PM responsible.  People voted for rhetoric.

Edit; and as I'm sure you are aware, there's a huge difference between Euroscepticism and voting to leave the damn thing entirely.

Boris not standing

Smartest thing he could do.  It's going to be a shit job, he's protecting his position for a future challenge.

Mind you in terms of cowardice it's up there with Tom Watson.

His one huge short-term problem will be credibility.  For example if May wins and says she's not invoking Article 50 until at least next year, if Boris challenges her on that point you can imagine the response.
