In all this madness we've established that Japan is the most bigoted place on earth so it's been a productive day nonetheless.

They make excellent products though. That's the most important thing.

That's the Chinese these days. Are you suggesting they all look alike?!

No it doesn't. My daughter is called a "hafu" (the equivalent of "half cast" in Japan) on a daily basis by sweet, well meaning elderly people. There's no offence taken because there was none intended.

This is a fucking topper, tbh.

Damn those octogenarians coming up an showering my daughter with praise and attention. Hell mend them for not using the politically correct terminology to describe her ethnicity!

Probably sizing you up to work you both to death on a new Burma railway.

That you're letting folk racially abuse your daughter because you see them as "sweet, well meaning elderly people".

If nobody involved considers the use of the term pejorative, how can it be abusive?

There's nothing contextually racist or abusive in what they're saying. My wife isn't offended by it either and she has experienced real racism.

Is this how we are going to determine racism now?

Acknowledging her race doesn't make it abusive.

Calling her "impure" certainly is offensive.

I interpreted it as a word that merely acknowledged she was mixed race, even if the literal translation is 'impure'.

And certainly offensive to who? you?

The reason so many terms are offensive here is not because they simply reference race but because they are loaded with a history of hatred and violence. If this word doesn't have all that baggage in Japan, it just a word for mixed race, then what is the issue?

In what way, shape or form were they calling her impure?

You're the only one that's suggested that, you inferring racist, you!

Mixed race people in Japan refer to themselves as hafu and don't resent the term. It's just a description.

Does it make it correct?

If it's good enough for Black people to use the N word.......
