It doesn't really matter if it is real or not. That whether it's genuine or not can even be considered is astounding. I think, if most are honest, they look at the transcript, think that it is absolutely ridiculous but would not bet the mortgage on it being false. There is a doubt. Because of the Russia scandal he is on the point of sacking his AG and an independently appointed special prosecutor. He may try to abuse Presidential pardoning powers. His SoS is at loggerheads with him and he's not on the best terms with his VP. In the scenario that unfolds there will be Republicans who will feel they must draw a line and oppose him. None of the above would be happening without the continual ongoing investigation into Russia.
