So, what is the purpose of the Orange Order that is still relevant today?  I believe it was originally founded to 'maintain the Protestant Ascendancy'.  In this secular day and age, that is obviously outdated - but what now?

It's a nice wee pressure valve that stops (most of them) getting into the real hard right fash stuff.

Maybe in days gone by, the old firm game too.  Now society has moved on and these institutions are just regressive and damaging.  Scotland would be better if all three didn't exist.

The Orange Order had its heyday in the late 19th century when Irish Home Rule gathered pace. Saying it belongs in the 17th century gives it more legitimacy than it deserves. It had its standing firmly entrenched in opposing Irish Catholics getting too uppity.

There used to be. Not sure whether it's still on display. It got vandalised at one point by a nutter from Glasgow called Alexander Radcliffe (?), who didn't understand that it was being used as a relatively high brow wind up of Nationalist politicians by the Ulster Unionist Party.

Ah the craic
