Cerberus
Butter at room temperature starts to separate and gets slightly oily on the edges. It's OK for some but me, not so much. Spreading hard butter onto soft bread is one of mankind's eternal struggles.

Oh and 'spreadable butter' is for the lower classes. I agree with you on yoghurt. Butter is for cooking with and should be stored in the fridge. It spreads adequately on toast (if you are a pleb and don’t use a conserve) and shouldn’t be spread on cold bread at all. If you are making a sannie use mayonnaise. I can’t believe people don’t know this. on yoghurt, is it possible that the colleague was culturing his own and needed to maintain ambient temperature?
BallochSonsFan
Judging by the Lidl in Giffnock thread, eating Fray Bentos pies has to be added to the list.

I agree with you on yoghurt. Easy solutionHeat the blade of your knife in boiling water. The butter will spread fine, funnily enough like a proverbial hot knife through butter.

Quicker than waiting on your kettle to boil.

Less waste of electricity that way.

I could equally be argued that it's an abbreviation for a shoe but I wouldn't use it in that sense either as I'm obviously the superior type

Your 'sannie' gaffe has been dealt with. Thankfully. Butter should, of course, be spread on bread/bread-equivalents. I had oatcakes with cheese earlier. I spread them with butter. This is normal. Last weekend I bought some beigels and served them with ham and scrambled eggs for breakfast - using butter on both inner surfaces. Tomorrow I'll cook some chicken soup and serve it with buttered rolls. Stick your 'sannie' and your mayonnaise up yer arse
