League Cup 2018/19 Group G

Recommended Posts

Says a lot about how well the team did for at least 3/4 of that match that I'm gutted in defeat.  If the lads can carry that on into the season we've a great chance of going up.

DGW was outstanding and the sight of him at left back at one point shows his commitment, and his goal was top drawer.  3-1 completely flattered Motherwell who were absolute mince until Johnson came on.  Also looked as if it should have been a goal kick in the build up to the equaliser, but thems the breaks unfortunately.

DGW mom for me, although Kevin Nicoll was outstanding in helping calm down play at times, although his old failings of diving into absolutely every tackle got him a booking and if he keeps doing that we might see him suspended more often than not

Looked fairly comfortable for around 70 mins then struggled to get out our half. Fair bit of luck involved in Motherwell's first 2 goals. Ferns should have had a shot on goal just before the 3rd Motherwell goal no idea what he was thinking trying to pass it.

I thought Motherwell were extremely poor defensively, which is surprising considering how solid they looked last season.

Two thirds of the good defence that ended last season wasn't there. Aldred is away and Dunne is out long term - and Hartley is miles off it.

Really tough on Clyde that - very few positives from a 'Well point of view. Hartley miles off being ready for the league games at the moment, which is a big worry.

Yup, he looks so slow and sluggish it’s unreal. I was hoping it was just rustiness but he’s miles off it at the minute, that’s Layne and Goodwillie terrorised him in consecutive weeks.

Kipre wasn’t exactly convincing either mind and Clyde had a few chances to finish us off 2nd half which they fortunately didn’t take. Hopefully McHugh’s fit for next week.

Going forward I’m not going to go over old ground, we all know the problems and it was no surprise to see it took a set piece to get us back into it- we never really look like breaking Clyde down until that point.

Frear the standout and the only real creative spark, done well to set up the 2nd and 3rd goals. Don’t think Sammon and Main really worked well together but good to see them both get on the scoresheet.

Kieran Hughes looks a more than able deputy keeper, really impressed by his handling especially and he was desperately unlucky with the equaliser after an excellent tip on to the cross bar. Fair play to Main though he had a rotten game but kept going and got his reward and that ultimately spurred Well on to get the win.

We didn't disgrace ourselves and Goodwillie took his goal brilliantly, only lapse really being McStays poor free kick which led to Motherwells second. A shame for the lad but unfortunately mistakes like that get punished at a higher level.

Motherwell wouldnt look out of place in league 2....a sure bet for a relegation fight !

We said that  this time last year and - had Celtic just suffered an off-day in the second of the two cup finals we reached - we'd have  been playing in Europe this week instead of this group.

Now there's a scary thought.

Disappointed  in the end result but a lot of positives to take from the game.  We competed well for 75 mins against a very strong physical side and with maybe a little slice of good fortune could have got something out of the game, thought Nicoll was fantastic followed by Mcstay and DGW, in fact everyone played well.  Thought Motherwell looked sluggish and devoid of ideas for most of the match but they played to their strength putting in high balls which eventually paid off.

Looks like we are ready for when the real action starts next week.

The fact that you reached 2 finals last season probably says more about scottish football than it does about motherwell !

Poor poor stuff for the most part today. Frear was good 2nd half tbf.

We are crying out for Craig Tanner to return imo, someone/anyone with even a flash of creativity. Why Robinson hasn’t prioristed signing that kind of player, and at the same time completely frozen out Bigi, in this window is a complete mystery.

The drop off in Hartley since his injury is really alarming. Really hope that it’s down to a lack of match fitness as opposed to a general decline. Cadden a big doubt for the 1st league game of the season next week. Need a big big improvement from everyone to even consider getting something from that.

Eta. The pitch was absolutely hideous which didn’t help either (ken I’m clutching)

That's a hammer blow if he ends up missing next week. He's the only player we've got who brings any semblance of attacking creativity to this side.

Windy as f**k at Ainslie Park but entertaining stuff and 3rd place in this group is about as good as we could have hoped for. After an absolute horsing off Queens last week it was good to see City up against a side nearer our level and we certainly look much better equipped than last season.
