Also the Isle of Man TT is utter instanity, and probably should be scrapped. It would be safer to just pick one entrant each year by lottery and shoot them dead.

Horses like humans and any other animal on the planet die, that's just a fact we all face. People die doing all sorts of pastimes / sports but I don't see rock climbing or motorcycle events coming under the same scrutiny. I suppose it's because horses lack the capacity to give consent, whereas human beings can make an informed choice about the risks involved Edited April 19, 2023 by Cosmic Joe

They wouldn't have the life they do without racing. Not sure about other parts of Scotland but you can see horses living pretty miserable lives in fields all over Ayrshire out in all weathers with very little attention. They attract zero interest as they would gain the "cause" zero publicity. Horses and horse racing are being used here (clearly quite effectively). If anyone fancies a debate in person I will be at Ayr for the opening day of the Scottish national meeting on Friday. -

The fact that you can point to miserable racehorses in Ayrshire fields is a pretty good argument in favour of banning horseracing, surely. Without the economic incentive to breed these horses, they'll stop being bred.
Highland Capital
These animals should be thankful they have an awful life rather than no life at all.

The best of food, hunners of exercise and they get to do what they enjoy best, namely chasing something really, really quickly.

People die doing all sorts of pastimes / sports but I don't see rock climbing or motorcycle events coming under the same scrutiny. I love stat abuse. If people were only concerned by fatalities and danger, the sensible measure would be of how much more likely a horse is to die when racing than when standing in a field. Given that even a busy horse will spend many hundred times more time standing in a field than racing, the body count itself tells you little. I’ve heard many normal, non protesty types saying that they just don’t like the racing because it’s cruel to the horses. I can see that point of view far more easily than the “horses love it” view that the Barbour welly wearers come out with. Personally, I’m sure horses love getting a metal gag put in, bound in leather and whipped by a dwarf as much as the rest of us do.
