2019/20 Challenge Cup

Recommended Posts

I would like to wish every club the very best of luck in defeating the u21 teams in round 1.

The rest of this competition looks brilliant.

Also it looks like Linfield are not participating.

SPFL website states the 3rd round consists of the following:-

Third round: Saturday 7 September or Sunday 8 September, 2019

32 Clubs (16 ties)

2 clubs from Northern Ireland Football League (Ballymena United & Glenavon)

2 clubs from Welsh Premier League (The New Saints & Connah’s Quay Nomads)

2 clubs from League of Ireland Premier Division (Waterford & Bohemians)

2 clubs from English National League (Solihull Moors & Wrexham)

10 clubs from Ladbrokes Championship

14 winners from second round

Pre-draw to determine which country will be allocated Pot A, Pot B, Pot C & Pot D to avoid 2 cross-border teams from the same country playing each other. Pot E has 24 Scottish teams

I note the "Irish Super Cup" has been reinstated for early November. It was groups of four when Setanta were sponsors. I think it was a four-team tournament after that. It's not been played for a while. It's being reincarnated as a one off affair - well, two off, as it's two legs - between the N.I.F.L. champs (Linfield) and the L.o.I. champs (Likely Dundalk, unless Shamrock Rovers close the gap by beating them tomorrow.)

Not sure who pays how much of the P.S.N.I. bill for policing matches, but Linfield v. either of those two is going to pull a heck of a lot more fans than a Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup quarter-final, so you can hardly blame them for not entering.

I note Ballymena beat N.S.I. Runavik 2-0 tonight. Doubt they'll still be in Europe come November though. Prishtina were held 1-1 by St.Joseph's in Kosovo. A mate has already booked to go to Kosovo and cheer The Famous in round two😂.

Aye just bin this competition now. As the years go on it becomes more and more ridiculous. Even if I did feel the inclination to go to a game, even if I had absolutely nothing else to do, that particular company's involvement means you couldn't pay me to go to a game. Bad news is we enter in round three. Hopefully we chuck it again like last year.

Admittedly, it is funny to see Falkirk entering with all the other seasiders.

Whats your gripe with them out of interest?

Since the tournament was reorganised there have been many crowds under 200:

191     Dundee 'B' v Hibs 'B'
190     Cove v Dundee 'B'
182     Edinburgh City v Albion Rovers
180     Turriff v Montrose
169     Stenhousemuir v Cove
168     Motherwell 'B' v Queen's Park
155     Aberdeen 'B' v St Johnstone 'B'
155     Albion Rovers v Spartans
153     Hamilton 'B' v Edinburgh City
150     East Stirlingshire v Motherwell 'B'
149     East Stirlingshire v Montrose
147     BSCG v East Stirlingshire
119     Cumbernauld v Hamilton 'B'
114     Albion Rovers v Hamilton 'B'
110     Dundee 'B' v Alloa

However crowds for various games seem to have gone unreported e.g. Ross County 'B' v Forfar, Kilmarnock 'B' v Berwick and Partick 'B' v Stirling University.

Certainly the conditions seem present for some similarly low crowds, and potentially even dipping under 100, assuming they are officially published.

I'd be stunned if our Colts v Cove attracted 100 or more fans.

Just now, HibeeJibee said:

Well your 'B' teams only previous home tie 3yrs ago v Turriff was reported as 320.

We actually had reserves back then.

Is there a rule allowing "overage" players for Colt sides this year? Our team who played Edinburgh City yesterday was likely close to what we'll play in these games, and that was the U18s with the Sports Scientist playing at centre half. I can't see many Saints fans heading to that, and I'm not sure what appeal it would have for Cove.

..and the game was played on a pishing wet Wednesday night at Stirling. Surprised that many turned up tbh

Due to Hampden getting re-turfed, our game against Celtic Colts will now be played at Airdrie 😂
