2019/20 Challenge Cup

It was reported across various news platforms in the autumn. Peterhead went on record objecting to the amount of prizemoney and travel grants being paid to foreign teams.

E.g. this report in Aberdeenshire Evening Express which cites between £91,000 and £99,000 as having been paid out upto R3:

https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/sport/football/scottish-football/fears-as-irn-bru-cash-fizzles-out-of-scotland/

It would end-up substantially more as Connahs Quay went another 3 rounds and Bohemians another round, and Connahs Quay played another 2 away ties.

You would admittedly have to deduct whatever is received from S4C for televising Welsh clubs.

Thanks for digging that out Hibee Jibee hopefully it clears up that loads of cash is being handed out to non Scottish sides.

The only thing I have against the Colt teams is that right from the start the Challenge Cup was just being used as a tool to get entry into the league system which would have led to some teams having more than one team in the league system which would have restricted proper teams like Edinburgh or Cove  earning a league place. There was all the guff about creating international players because of experience gained against part time lower league players. Colt teams have added nothing to the competition & if more teams were needed they should have come from the HFL &  LL. Good to see  Jim still gets a reaction from Virginton even although he was the only one to mention him.

As well as the S4C deal, which is obviously a direct result of the foreign teams, you've also got to think about intangibles like the sponsors' money and the other TV deals with BBC Alba and latterly BT Sport. It's possible that those could be either less valuable or even non-existent without the inclusion of the foreign clubs.

Don't really know the ins & outs of the tv deals but would be surprized if they amount to a vast sum. Mr Doncaster seems to continue to think he has turned what was a decent wee competition for Scottish sides that were unlikely to feature in many cup finals into a international diddy cup that many supporters have no interest in until the semi or final stage. Be interesting to see the crowds at the games featuring Premier U21 this season. Made it clear to my own club that if we end up  having to play a Colt side in the next round even although my season ticket would cover it I would not be attending.

If it really was for the greater good of Scottish fitba I’d be content with it. Our co-efficient for European cup games is so low we probably won’t have any teams in the Europa Cup when Europa 2 starts. But it’s just about getting young players match ready for a transfer fee.

Scotland’s actually one of the last in Europe to develop this. Pep Guardiola won his first title as manager with Barcelona B in 2008, Spanish fourth tier league. Can’t see the tide turning. It’s a catch-22. Pump the wee teams and their club’s will whine this is why they need in the league. Let them win and SPFL say it’s working!

Tbf... Irn-Bru and Tunnock are clearly Scottish-centred brands. BBC Alba have shown as many all-Scottish ties as not, and upon joining BT Sport selected an all-Scottish SF last season.

So potentially diminished more likely than non-existent. Question - viewed financially in last season's context - is ultimately whether diminution would be more or less than say £135-150k or whatever it would've ultimately ended-up. (Indeed more given Scottish clubs wouldn't need away travel grants either).

I think the fact theres about ten games on in this competition just now, yet theres not been a single post about a single moment in any of them, says a lot.

Think last season in the early rounds a few lower league teams showed their disregard for this by playing understrength teams against Colt sides with mixed results. There has been a poster on here in the past that knows about Dutch football where there have been B Teams involved the last time I noticed him posting that they were now realising it had been a mistake & had worked against the league set up.there.

Colts Roll Call:

Colin Doyle: 34 year old Ireland International

Ross Draper: 30 years old, 200+ senior Scottish appearances.

Alex Petkov: Playing for Hearts colts, currently on loan at Clyde

Tommy Block: Playing for Hibs colts, currently on loan at Queen's Park

Vykintas Slivka: 24 year old, 35 caps for Lithuania

Oli Shaw: 60+ senior Scottish appearances

Gregg Wylde: 150+ senior apperances

Marky Munro: Playing for St Johnstone colts, currently on loan at Stenny

Really find it hard to get motivated for this nonsense.

Very interesting to note the number of players the proper clubs look to have dropped from Saturday.

It appears even many sides from tiers 4 & 5 have taken to resting some or most men in this:

Queen's Park - 9 changes
Albion Rovers - 8 changes
Cove Rangers - 5 changes

Elgin City - 1 change

Fraserburgh - 6 changes
Formartine Utd - 4 changes

Brora Rangers - 3 changes

East  Kilbride - 7 changes
Berwick Rangers - 4 changes

Kelty Hearts - 2 changes

Marky Munro is 18 tbf.

Our only senior player in the 11 is Liam Gordon.

And just as many supporters had no interest in the tournament until that stage before any changes were made at all. The rose-tinted view that you seem to have about the popular and successful Challenge Cup of old is utter nonsense.

Have never seen for anything more than it is, a competition for lower league clubs with an outside chance of picking up a cup for one. You can see by the number of changes some teams have made tonight how it ranks with league clubs at this stage.

That's 4 players over the age of 21 across 10 Premiership teams.
