Guest
It all looks like a bit of a setup job to me, the Iranians could have done serious damage if they'd really wanted, however this looks like a public face saving situation to appease all parties. As for Trump, while it's a given that he hates the Iranians and is also an unstable clown, we've been here before with the North Korean stuff over the past couple of years where he looks set on "destroying his enemies" but then does a full reverse and goes down the very public pals route to make it look like he's some sort of messiah as a statesman. Obviously we've got the added complications of Oil, Saudis, Israel, Russia, ISIS and the lynch pin in it all which is Turkey but all in all I'd put my money on the de-escalation of hostilities with the odd bit of well choreographed sabre rattling thrown in.............

welshbairn
I think the Iranians were sending a message to the Americans that if they wanted to hurt them badly, they could. The recent attack on the Saudi oil facility showed how accurate their technology can be, to be able to hit a base like the one below without killing anyone, knowing that a bunch of crispy GI's would have meant a devastating response, told Trump that plane loads of coffins on the evening news channels was a real possibility in the lead up to the election. Also it was the minimum they could do to appease the folks at home, with their own elections coming up. Their main objective now will be to get the Iraqi Government to send the Americans home. Al-Assad air base Given that Iraq, where their bases are, is majority Shia (like Iran), missile attacks should be the least of the Americans worries. The prospect of a guerrilla war umpteen times the scale seen in Afghanistan or Iraq (initially) should terrify them.
SweeperDee
The prospect of a guerrilla war umpteen times the scale seen in Afghanistan or Iraq (initially) should terrify them.Exactly this. Doesn’t matter how much you bomb a country, or its people; in guerrilla warfare you could be attacked anywhere, by anyone. Doesn’t help the Americans that Iran is far more mountainous and plain larger than Iraq and Afghanistan. Would take years, and definitely longer for any sort of on-the-ground resistance to die down, much like what happened in previous theatres.

Savage Henry
This was the Yemeni Houthi Rebels. Not the Iranians. That’s not correct. The precise attacks didn’t come from ragtag rebels. The logical extension is that the attacks on Erbil were either not from Iranian proxy forces or they deliberately misfired.

dirty dingus
We should know in an hour whether to cancel all visits to the Middle East and as too how soon we should start stockpiling sandbags and tinned peaches as Trump is addressing the nation on the Iranian attacks at 4pm Weegie time.

They are hardly "ragtag", they have taken over half a country.

Newbornbairn
Looks like that Ukranian plane was shot down by the Iranians. Video showing it falling in a fireball, pictures circulating showing shrapnel puncture holes all over the fuselage and the Iranians have found the black boxes - but they're not releasing them to Boeing, Ukraine or anyone else. dirty dingus
He is calling out Nato saying he want's haunners if it goes pear shaped. Basically saying Obama is head of the Iranian terrorists and that America has hypersonic death rays or some shit.
