Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Recommended Posts

I've given up on looking at data on omicron.  Twitter is just rife with confirmation bias and its not surprise that accounts that have been howling about long Covid and one million cases per day are producing numbers suggesting its worth than Delta in terms of hospitalisation whereas those that have been howling equally loudly about bad colds and bedwetters have numbers suggesting its much, much milder.

I've prepared myself for the worst regarding restrictions. Mental health is in the pits at the moment anyway so it's better for me not to expect common sense to prevail.

Hope you're okay pal. Just do your own thing and don't worry about new restrictions. I pop in this thread now and again but I've largely ignored all news on it and just carried on with my life - it made a huge difference for my mental health.

Thanks mate, I think it's just a combination of this time of year and having life go back to normal somewhat to then thinking it's going to be taken away again. I've ignored the news reports and whatnot but I like hearing from actual human beings on it all.

Pfizer got their pill certified, cuts hospitalisation by 89% that's going to be key at ending the pandemic in countries that dont have the facilities to vaccinate as quickly as we do.

No way, keep them here in case we need them. Send Africa some tanks and guns and let them get on with it.

At the risk of sounding like a selfish arsehole, I’ve had enough of this self isolation pish. If omicron is as transmissible as they say, this Christmas is going to be absolutely fucked for everyone because everyone (as in your average pub goer) is almost guaranteed to get it. Folk are going to miss out on catch ups, memories and a festive sesh because of a shitey variant that evidence suggests so far is a mild version of the virus. The PCR test can detect what variant it is - honestly at the point where I think anyone who tests positive for omicron should be allowed to carry on as normal. The vaccines were meant to spell an end to this. Will we just keep making new boosters every time there’s a new variant and keep getting folk to isolate - forever? Seems that way.

Nobody else find the big push for boosters to help stop the spread of this new varient a bit strange, seeing as boosters were here before it was

No. Protection from vaccines were waning anyway and Delta was not exactly abating. If not for Omicron we'd be plodding away as was and I'd be getting a 6 month booster in February/March instead of December.

The good news is that having latched onto Booster shots early, we should be a decent position where the more vulnerable elements of society should be well protected despite the apparent significant immune escape from this variant.

This has been quite the build up to advice on social mixing.

BBC website saying social mixing will be advice rather than law, so a TV broadcast on two channels (iirc) to announce "advice" with probably a thinly veiled threat of more restrictions further down the road. Absolutely sick of the grandstanding

Anyway, BBC reporting we are looking at something like the ROI which will be familiar to all of us from the Spring:

Where did you see that?  Only seen the below from BBC
