Comrie
That handball by Cash in the Villa/Southampton game... You see him diving to stop a shot with his arm- no penalty. A ball gets blasted at a player from two feet and a player has no time to move their arm- penalty. I just don't get VAR decisions at all.
peasy23
I have no idea how that wasn't given as a penalty against Cash, especially when you consider some of the previous handball decisions we've seen.
craigkillie
That's an absolutely baffling decision not to give Southampton a penalty. It's a clear pen under the old handball rule, the new handball rule, and any handball rule you want. Literally stretches his arm out to his side to block the ball - should have been a red card too.
Erih Shtrep
VAR is a farce.
Joey Jo Jo Junior Shabadoo
The only explanation I can think of is money from a South Asian betting syndicate being involved. I’m sticking a few quid on Aston Villa. ETA: Seems Mike Dean is making things up to justify his decision. FuzzyBear
How can they watch that 7 or 8 times on VAR and then not give a penalty. That is one of the worst decisions I can remember. -
peasy23
The explanation given on the Bein commentary is that because the ball glances his thigh then hits his hand it's not a penalty.Lovely goal by Villa to give them a half time lead.

Until next week, when a shot comes off someone's thigh, hits their arm and is given as a penalty.
craigkillie
I don't feel like that was intended to apply to cases where the player continues to extend his arm out towards the ball after the deflection. The logical extension of their argument here is that if it deflects off your body you can catch the ball and throw it out of the box.
Diamonds are Forever
There is one angle where you can see the ball just touches off his thigh and then on to his hand. So it's the correct decision, a very good spot by them actually. I think the ball would have hit his arm regardless of the touch though, which does make the law seem a bit ridiculous here. Erih Shtrep
Hard to believe Grealish has only 5 England caps. He's everything England have lacked for the last 40 years.
peasy23
Very tight offside call denies Saints an equaliser.
The Master
This new interpretation of offside with the “shirt line” is nonsense. As the commentator just noted, Ings might well have been onside if he hadn’t been wearing a black armband.

Also, absolutely zero scrutiny, despite the margins and Nth degree analysis of shirts, of the point at which the ball was played. Shambles, and tbh, they are getting he league they deserve

When it’s that close, they should just defer to the on-field decision. Which wouldn’t have changed things tonight, of course. Its total nonsense. They obviously could be using super high speed cameras, but to apply such ludicrous margins to the attacker but not the playing of the ball is just ridiculous.
Bully Wee Villa
We got away with that. Makes up for the decisions that have gone against us in recent matches. Notably Man City when they changed the rules just for one game, then clarified that they hadn't oh no honest guv. Delighted with that win, Southampton are a good side. Arch Stanton
Dean Smith on MotD regarding the offside... "Just as well Matty Cash doesn't have John McGinn's backside otherwise Ings would have been onside."

I'd imagine DS said it not long after the game finished at 21.50. Great minds and all that.
