I don't have a huge issue with appointments but there needs to be a much stronger process of confirming these appointments. Whatever you might think of George Folkes, he is an ex cabinet minister and was also in the Scottish Parliament. But unfair to lump him in with Botham. There maybe should be a time limit on how long people can serve. I would still argue that, for all its faults, the Lords does a better job than the commons or even committees at scrutinising legislation. It will also mean that people who do come here to study will be less likely to stay on afterwards, reducing the levels of specialist and advanced knowledge in the economy and harming productivity.
