Organised crime thread

Recommended Posts

There's a car on my usual running route that has always pissed me off by being parked on the same corner right up on the pavement so that you have to squeeze past it. Ran by there the other day and it was completely burnt out with no damage to anything else around. Unless there's another disgruntled runner out there I assumed this was some small-time crime related activity.

Still, hopefully it'll shave a good 10 seconds off my PB.

Member of the Daniel family attacked with a machete at his work.

I tried to go to the dump on Sunday afternoon but it was closed and the guy on the gate said it was due to a police incident. Obviously I didn't expect this.

The Sun's report was a bit more dramatic, saying he worked there and was attacked because of he's related to. Four guys went in, held him down and hacked at his head, body and legs with a machete. A witness said it was a bloodbath. I'm amazed anyone stayed to witness it.

Some details from one of the tabloid reports are that the man recently murdered in Glasgow had been socialising with members of the Lyons gang when he was killed.  Could be some more tit-for-tat killings starting.

"Waste management" gained fame as a euphamism for organised crime after the Sopranos, where one of Tony Soprano's main rackets was control of recycling and trash haulage in New Jersey.  It's long been a very reliable source of income for US based gangsters and one that's grown in recent years with new environmental regulations increasing the cost of waste disposal.  In Italy, specifically Naples, waste management is a massive business for the local gangs, some of the land around Campania is extremely polluted due to the illegal dumping of toxic waste.  The Camorra is even alleged to have disposed of large quantities of toxic industrial waste by sailing shipments of it to the Somali coast and sinking the ships.

Essentially the way these scams all work is that businesses linked to organised crime obtain contracts to dispose of hazardous waste properly but then just dump it illegally.  The gangs then pocket the cash without havign to spend it on proper disposal.  It's becoming increasingly common in the UK and it's interesting that someone who is a known criminal who was released from prison recently for drug dealing is employed in a city council waste management facility.  Was he on the public payroll?  His uncle ran a scrap yard as a front business for heroin dealing, is that ongoing?

Pertinent part to Scotland

The lack of concern from central government is astonishing and alarming. A decade ago, Scottish police investigating a taxi company owned by a well-known (and very violent) gangster were surprised to discover that the taxi company had been given a contract worth more than £2 million by NHS Glasgow to take patients to and from hospitals. The discovery was particularly surprising as Glasgow police had warned Glasgow NHS that the taxi company was linked to organised crime.

The incident upset several senior Glasgow police inspectors. They wondered how many public sector contracts in Scotland were being awarded to what were either straightforwardly criminal enterprises or linked to companies that were ultimately controlled by criminals. So they obtained Scotland’s public sector procurement database, which lists each good or service that is purchased with the roughly £11 billion worth of public money that is spent every year in Scotland. The inspectors matched the information up with Police Scotland’s list of individuals and companies known to be involved in organised crime.

They were shocked by what they found: a significant portion — perhaps as much as 10 per cent — of the amount being spent every year on the purchase of services by the public sector in Scotland was going to criminal organisations. And that was just the companies known to the police. Their own list was not a comprehensive index of every criminal enterprise, and they knew it. But even using that list, it was clear that tens of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money was being handed to criminals. Local councils, the NHS and other government agencies were purchasing transport, security, waste disposal and other services from criminal gangs. Criminals were growing rich on public sector contracts.

Scottish gangs have been busy dumping HGVs full of waste in Lanarkshire for a wee while now. “Win” a contract from a council, take the waste away in an old/stolen truck then just park it at the side of the road.

Probably not that much of a surprise a gangland figure walks into a council job when you have a top council official running about in a cloned car; a speciality of some Glasgow crime operations.

If you read books about the classic era of 20th century gangsters in the US, loads of them had 'city jobs'.  There's an anecdote in one book I read about the Chicago Outfit, where a notorious hitman was arrested for assault and within a few minutes a number of city and union officials showed up at the police station demanding he be released.  This is a guy who was undoubtedly responsible for dozens of murders - he died of cancer before he could be charged for them.

Mad that the same sort of thing, maybe less dramatically, is happening here.

When you go to the scrappie for heroin do you need to buy something else to make it look genuine?

It'd look a bit suspicious, all the customers walking out with car parts and throwing them away.

Same thing happened in Baltimore, the cops busted a guy carrying cash out of a tower block and before any charges could be brought those with power had facilitated his release and let him keep the cash.

Handy guide to who is who. Well, apart from a glaring omission…

Who? (PM if not for public consumption)

PS - If it’s someone well known with books and films don’t bother but I’m guessing you are talking about someone I don’t know.

The injured comes from a big family and some have normal jobs. Think he leads a quiet life and was attacked because of his name
