HibeeJibee
I've been trying to establish when some of the all-time great footballers played matches in Scotland. Can anyone add to the following list? In particular I may well have missed youth games, friendlies and odd representative matches. Lev Yashin #1 10 May 1967 Scotland v USSR (3 Dec 1965 Celtic & Rangers Select v Dynamo Moscow at Hampden friendly postponed; 16 Nov 1960 Rangers v Dynamo Moscow friendly didn't play) Carlos Alberto Never Franz Beckenbauer #1 16 Apr 1969 Scotland v West Germany WC 1970 qualifier #2 30 Sep 1970 Rangers v Bayern Munich Fairs Cup R1 #3 19 Apr 1972 Rangers v Bayern Munich Cup-Winners' Cup SF #4 14 Nov 1973 Scotland v West Germany #5 12 May 1976 Bayern Munich v St Etienne European Cup Final at Hampden #6 25 Nov 1981 Aberdeen v Hamburg UEFA Cup R3 Nilton Santos Never Johan Cruyff #1 24 Mar 1971 Celtic v Ajax European Cup QF at Hampden #2 16 Jan 1973 Rangers v Ajax Supercup #3 15 Sep 1982 Celtic v Ajax European Cup R1 #4 14 Sep 1983 St Mirren v Feyenoord UEFA Cup R1 #5 11 Jan 1984 Rangers v Feyenoord friendly Alfredo di Stefano #1 08 May 1957 Scotland v Spain WC 1958 qualifier #2 18 May 1960 Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankurt European Cup Final at Hampden #3 10 Sep 1962 Celtic v Real Madrid friendly #4 25 Sep 1963 Rangers v Real Madrid European Cup R1 Michel Platini Never (22 Oct 1960 St Mirren v St Etienne UEFA Cup R2 didn't play) Garrincha Never Diego Maradona #1 2 Jun 1979 Scotland v Argentina Pele #1 25 Jun 1966 Scotland v Brazil Ferenc Puskas #1 08 Dec 1954 Scotland v Hungary #2 18 May 1960 Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankurt European Cup Final at Hampden #3 10 Sep 1962 Celtic v Real Madrid friendly #4 25 Sep 1963 Rangers v Real Madrid European Cup R1 #5 07 Oct 1964 Hibs v Real Madrid friendly #6 17 Nov 1965 Kilmarnock v Real Madrid European Cup R1 Marco van Basten #1 10 Apr 1984 Rangers v Ajax friendly Eusebio #1 28 Sep 1965 Rangers v Benfica friendly #2 18 Jun 1966 Scotland v Portugal #3 12 Nov 1969 Celtic v Scotland European Cup R2 #4 13 Oct 1971 Scotland v Portugal Euro 72 qualifier (29 Sep 1960 Hearts v Benfica European Cup Prelim didn't play) Edited July 8, 2021 by HibeeJibee
paranoid android
Oleg Blokhin played in a friendly for Dynamo Kiev at Tynecastle around 1982 - not sure if you'd class him as one of the greats, but he was a fairly big deal. Richey Edwards
Paul Pogba played against Ayr United for Manchester United.
Anfield 1977
Bobby Chartlon numerous times for club and country. Likewise George Best ....... too many games to mention including his tilme at Easter Road
HibeeJibee
From ScottishLeague.net: Michel Platini, would you believe, came on as a half-time sub for France Amateurs v Scotland Amateurs at Somerset Park in Ayr on 10 October 1973. It was a UEFA qualifier, and he also played in the return match in Sete in Feb 74.
Sergeant Wilson
Stanley Matthews played for a couple of Scottish teams during the war. Ballack for Germany? He probably doesn't count.

I was not including Charlton, Matthews or Bobby Moore: as they would have played here numerous times in internationals, inter-league games, European matches, friendlies plus other representative fixtures. Also as you note Matthews and Best actually turned out for clubs here. Matthews actually once played at Hampden for the home team: Great Britain v Europe in 1947. 39 minutes ago, Steven W said: Lionel Messi v Dundee Utd (twice I think?) v Dundee Utd at Tannadice in a pre-season friendly He also played v Hibs in a friendly at Murrayfield (but not v Hearts there preceding year IIRC)? He must've played against Rangers and Celtic a few times in CL too? Same with Cristiano Ronaldo plus perhaps friendlies while at Manchester United. Modern players will have been here more often due to more international qualifiers, European football, pre-season touring, etc. With no disrespect to them: I'm not rating the like of Oleg Blokhin, Paul Pogba or Michel Ballack in the same category as some of those we're talking about. thisal
In 1992 Scotland v Italy. Maldini, Baresi and Baggio I was raging because Scotland could only draw 0-0 against an Italian side that included Maldini and Baresi, two of the best defenders ever. Also a defence that contained Derek Whyte and Dave McPherson kept out Roberto Baggio. A fortnight ago we celebrated a 0-0 draw against a team that included Shaw, Rice and Ming like we'd won the tournament. Do you think our expectation have slipped?
Miguel Sanchez
Messi: Lionel Messi - Detailed stats | Transfermarkt 23rd October 2007 in a 0-0 draw against Rangers in the Champions League 20th February 2008 in a 3-2 win over Celtic in the Champions League (2 goals) 7th November 2012 in a 2-1 loss to Celtic in the Champions League (1 goal) You'd probably need to check for that time Barca played friendlies against Hibs and Dundee United. You could also presumably add Xavi and Iniesta for these dates, plus the Euro 2012 qualifier against Scotland at Hampden.

Spyro
Zidane has played here a few times… If he was in the French squad that unofficially opened the new Hampden in 1999/2000 time (0-2) then I saw him that night and of course the wonder goal vs Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 Champions League Final. What about the “real” Ronaldo? Edited July 10, 2021 by Spyro
Eednud
Johann Neeskens for the Netherlands and Paul Breitner for West Germany played in a few games at different Scottish grounds during the 1970 UEFA Youth Tournament. Neeskens returned in 1971 for Ajax v Celtic and Breitner in 1972 for Bayern v Rangers and again in 1983 v Abetdeen. ETA: Luis Figo played for Portugal in the 1989 U16 World Cup and possibly played in the Semi Final v Scotland. Thistle_do_nicely
Lothar Matthaus? I get the reasons above why more modern players aren't maybe in the spirit of the thread, but if he qualifies I'd have him in there.
tamthebam
Hibs famous(five?)ly stuck 5 past Dino Zoff at Easter Road in 1967. Zoff has European Championship and World Cup winners medals. I heard the 79 year old Zoff on the radio the other day, still going strong.

Does anyone seriously think they haven't.
tamthebam
He's perhaps not really a great player but as far as I know Benni McCarthy is the only person to have scored in two World Cup tournaments AND watched Whitehill Welfare v Edinburgh City at Ferguson Park
