ICTChris
Some rumours that the shoot downs weren’t friendly fire but were done by infiltrators with MANPADS. Edited to add - seems confirmed that there have been four Russian Air Force craft shot down today, two Mi-8 helicopters and two fighter jets. Lots of wild speculation that it could air to air missiles from Ukrainian fighter jets, a couple of Russian nationalist channels speculating that Ukraine has F16s. A catastrophic day for the Russian air force though, must be one of their worst days for loss of manpower and shoot downs since WW2. LongTimeLurker
Don't think the Ukrainians are allowed to use anything NATO supplied that deep into Russian territory, but I guess they do have Soviet era missiles that could do that sort of thing.

So Britain sent the cruise missiles, America sent the decoys. The B-model is being phased out of service, so it’s an ideal weapon to supply to Ukraine. The experience gained from their use is invaluable, and the technology is at least two generations old. As a fun bonus, the MALD could be used to mimic a Russian aircraft flight profile and behavior…and, coincidently there are reports of a SU-35S, a SU-34 and two Mi-8’s being shot down. Wonder if they f**ked with air defense radars and systems, and the Russians might have capped a couple of their own?

Karpaty Lviv
Another ominous air raid over the country over the last hour or so. Whole country affected, although Kharkiv, where one of my friends has stayed, sent me a video of her moving her sleeping bag into the hall way. Hopefully she’s just sleeping but Kharkiv in particularly isn’t exactly something the Russians doesn’t like to target. In a video she sent, she heard the windows shaking. This was at 10.18pm our time. Haven’t heard anything since.

LongTimeLurker
Novichok strikes again maybe. I'm sure Vlad wanted Belarus to be more actively involved than they have been and Lukashenko's determination and ability to continue his personal dictatorship has probably been the only reason Belarus has remained an independent sovereign state for the last twenty years or so (ironically in many ways). Suspect it will turn out to be like rumours of the fat North Korean having popped his clogs though.
welshbairn
Bakhmut seems to be going badly for the Russians forced to replace Prigozhin's prisoners in their knee deep trenches.

ICTChris
Reports today in the Washington post that Prigozhin offered to give Ukrainian intelligence the locations of Russian targets across the front lines in exchange for them withdrawing from Bakhmut. Ukraine rejected the offer, not trusting Prigozhin. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/05/14/prigozhin-wagner-ukraine-leaked-documents/

TxRover
Illuminating the most basic problem the Russians face, the following TASS press release shows two Colonels were on the front lines to fight off a Ukrainian assault. By the description, the assault was a minor one (loss of 3 tanks, etc), and one where you would have expected the highest commander present to be perhaps a Captain or just possibly a Major. The need to have high ranking officers lead Russian formations was highlighted early intense was when the Russians lost a series of army commanders and other generals. It appears that Russian forces are still reliant upon high level officers directly supervising activities that would be delegated to much less senior officers in the West. There is no conceivable reason a Colonel in charge of 700-900 troops should have been present on the frontline leading the fight, he should be in a forward command post organizing support and tactics for his troops. “MOSCOW, May 14. /TASS/. Colonel Vyacheslav Makarov, the commander of the 4th motorized infantry brigade, was killed in the fighting in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov said on Sunday. "Commander of the 4th motorized rifle brigade, Colonel Vyacheslav Makarov, personally led the battle while on the front line. Two enemy attacks were repelled, and the soldiers of the brigade destroyed three tanks, four infantry fighting vehicles, and two armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. During the defense against the third attack, the brigade commander was seriously wounded and died during evacuation from the battlefield," said Konashenkov. Konashenkov also informed of the death of the deputy commander of the army corps for military-political work, Colonel Yevgeny Brovko, who led the efforts of the personnel. "During the battle to repel one of the attacks, Colonel Yevgeny Brovko heroically died after receiving multiple shrapnel wounds," said Konashenkov.”
