I'm wondering whether instead of (or in addition to) a cost-of-living crisis (which is undoubtedly affecting those at the bottom), the wider problem is that we have a personal debt and inability to budget crisis? I wonder whether the anger from the middle earners is actually just people looking for someone to blame other than themselves. Like many people, I've experienced personal debt when I was younger. It never occurred to me to blame anyone else for it though (including lenders and governments). Is this blame thing a modern phenomenon? Or have people always been this unwilling to accept personal responsibility? From recent experience, what if a family member dies unexpectedly and you need to find the funeral costs? This isn't anything to do with managing budgets or personal responsibility. There are other examples anyone can give.

Yup, my wife and I have two disabled kids which means my wife is unable to work due to carer responsibilities and a large part of my 'disposable' income goes on medical / therapeutic supplies for them. I am at the top end of the salary scale but one unexpected bill could easily tip us into unmanageable debt.
19QOS19
Jeezo, this thread isn't doing much to dispel the notion that the teaching profession is the whiniest in the world. [emoji23] How do you know a teacher is hard working and deserves more pay? Hang around with one of them for 17 seconds and they'll tell you. Ad nauseum. [emoji23] In the meantime, a brief listen to what universities and employers have to say about the abilities of school leavers should provide a sobering counter-argument. Someone, somewhere is kidding themselves on about the quality of our teaching. It's beyond simplistic to say school leavers who haven't done well is down to the teachers tbh.

Nobody on here is claiming that they're vastly underpaid. I'd have said that your witless observation about the abilities of school leavers was beneath you, if only it was.
VincentGuerin
I'm sure I've posted this before on other threads. But I'm amazed Oaksoft still gets folk replying to him. I mean, he's not even subtle. Get a grip, folks.

Your job seems to be taking umbrage. With no wit.

ICTChris
The teachers comments are fascinating. People are being misogynists if they object or if they are women they are just jealous of her. There could no other reason for not wanting a teacher to be appearing in publicly available pornography! She would certainly have been fired and she’ll probably be struck off as a teacher anyway.

Am Featha Taigh Nan Clach
With regards using the tax brackets as a barometer for 'well paid', even if I did get a 10% pay rise to £46, 570, I still wouldn't pay anything at the 41% Higher tax band.

ICTChris
Bit of controversy brewing in schools. There is a strike on Thursday, NASUWT and SSTA members are striking but EIS members are not. I think the majority of teachers are members of the EIS so will be in. Management have said that if required teachers who are in should cover classes for striking colleagues but EIS members are refusing to do so. Threats of disciplinary action are being made by some councils. Some schools management teams have also floated the idea of going back to remote learning for schools that are required to close due to staff being on strike. Again, there’s been pushback from teachers on doing this to mitigate strike action.
