Every time the UK, or more specifically England, votes for something horrific, a bunch of Scottish Nationalists convince themselves it's somehow going to be great news for Scottish independence.

All that ever happens is that it ends up being disastrous news for the most vulnerable people throughout the UK (and the desperate and needy who might want to come to live here).

Take cover.

You're repeating yourself and that isn't such a good look.

Also, the bolded part, as well as being unedifying, avoids the trouble of engaging in any meaningful debate.

Considering there's f**k all we can do about it, hoping it leads to some change seems to be fair.

Realistically, the UK is going to head down this path until the plight of the poor and vulnerable becomes impossible to deny for even the most hardened of the I'm Alright, Jack brigade. We're nowhere near that yet. Everybody's going to be just trying to mitigate the damage for the foreseeable.

Edit: actually, that's not true. We'll be heading down this path until the I'm Alright, Jack brigade stop being alright. It's been most amusing to see some of the reactions to the energy price hike from people who purport to have a little cash, with nary a thought for the people with less than them.

I'm neither pro nor anti Scottish Nationalism if that's what you're implying. But it seems to be mainly those who think that Truss will be good news for the nationalist movement who are embracing her potential appointment on here.

Agree on the repeating myself and will try to desist from making the same point again.

Another of Truss's brilliant policy suggestions is, after making a success of forced human trafficking to Rwanda, to do the same to Turkey, who are currently hosting 4 million refugees, more than any other country on the planet.

I'm really not. But, if you made me pick a side, I'd say I'm not generally in favour of fragmentation. I believe in a federal, socialist, UK. Or, ideally, a federal, socialist, Europe or better still world.

As it becomes increasingly unlikely that such a thing will ever happen, at least in my lifetime, I'm more sympathetic to the idea of Nationalism and if I lived in Scotland and was given the choice I would probably vote for independence in the hope of permanently ridding the place of the Tories.

In The Spectator hustings broadcast, candidates were given the first minute to give a snapshot of themselves as PM. Sunak weighed in with getting inflation under control, growth and Thatcher; Truss launched into her favourite topic of war and standing up to Putin.

I'm not sure which of the two worried me most. To say there's hard times ahead for millions is an understatement. It seems that a further hard shift to the right is on the way.

How the new PM handles the referendum question will be worth watching. I can't see a straight No or some faffing about with "now is not the time" resulting in anything other than a marked rise in those wanting indy. The pressure will surely be on Westminster. There's certainly nothing in Johnson's time or the circus in the aftermath that makes me want to stay in the Untied Kingdom much longer.

It's been said before, but it would be so Scotland to finally achieve independence and celebrate by voting in a Conservative government.

What a chance missed by the Tories. Their big thing always is that they bring in a new leader, pretend to the country that it is a new government/fresh start/day one and so on and keep winning elections.

So it'll be Boris's chancellor or Boris's foreign secretary. No change.

Great news from a get them out point of view (though Mordaunt turned out to be quite unimpressive also).

There is no anti-nationalism, anti-fragmentation choice when it comes to Scotland’s place in the UK. There is only:

1. Scottish nationalism - voting for Scotland to gain independence from the UK.

2. UK nationalism - voting for Scotland to remain within a separatist state which is intent on further fragmenting the EU.

Difficult to be sure. But I do think Scotland is a more compassionate country than the UK as a whole, at the moment, and wouldn't be stupid enough to fall into that trap.

Yeah, sure. That's why I'm more sympathetic to Scottish Nationalism than before and would probably support it now, if I had a vote.

Nobody is really offering a global socialist state anytime soon, sadly...

Quite something reading all the  separatist fanatics denouncing the new Tory leader and PM.

I think either will do just fine but I think I would prefer Truss due to her tax cutting pledges.

Hardly a balanced thread but hey- ho, that’s P&B for you.

Keep banging away folks as your ‘independence’ looks just as far away as ever.

Truss is an economic illiterate.  Her tax policies will only fuel inflation further.

You can't have your first, second or third choices I'm afraid so it is about what you can get.

I don't believe "nationalism" is what is on offer in Scotland, if it was it would be riding at or around 20% in the polls like it always does and I would be a million miles from it.

My vote isn't for permanently ridding Scotland of what could be characterised as a Tory vote.

I'm more concerned with the underpinning establishment and their dragging effect on us.

UK federalism is dead in the water - thanks to the Labour Party.

Won’t stop, in any future referendum campaign, either the Tories or “Let’s make Brexit Work” Labour trying to pretend they actually hate borders and truly believe in countries working together in political union. I doubt much of the media will comment on the sheer hypocrisy.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the  “Vote No Borders” (a Tory front if I recall) campaign was reactivated as though Brexit simply didn’t exist and the UK was a bastion of making global political union work.
