Dundee Riots

Last night saw rioting in Dundee.  Youths ran amok in Kirkton, setting fires, vandalising cars and buildings and throwing fireworks at riot police.  A Police Scotland helicopter circled the area during the trouble.  It appears no-one has been injured.

The leader of Dundee city council said: "This isn't just a wee bonfire. Blocking roads with bins ablaze, smashing up cars and damaging our schools are scenes that you'd expect in an action movie or war-torn nation.

"I'm shocked but more than that, I'm angry. This reckless behaviour endangers lives, with emergency vehicles unable to pass on Balgowan Avenue and it costs residents and every taxpayer money."

There's historically been a bit of trouble around Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night in Edinburgh, a number of youths were jailed a couple of years ago for attacking police during rioting in Granton.  I think it passed fairly calmly last year, Dundee seem to have picked up the riot baton.

Were any Dundee based P&Bers involved in the rioting?

Have any P&Bers ever taken part in rioting?

Don’t really understand why the police will get themselves in all sorts of bother for roughly manhandling and beating protestors but when it comes to dealing with neds setting fires and destroying peoples cars they do nothing. The neds have realised this and this upcoming Guy Fawkes night could be see Dundee become Helmand Province for the night. Police should be getting the batons and water cannons out for these minks.

Who is more likely to be carrying a blade? Having lived in North America I came to the conclusion that the Police being armed routinely is actually usually a good thing because would be neds realise that acting up can result in getting shot restoring peace to the streets. This works as long as you don't do what the Americans did and allow private citizens to be armed as well. The Canadians found the right balance on that.

There's always a massive bonfire and fireworks in kirkton every year on guy fawkes and it's just a case of staying away from balgowan until the fire's put out. This is a lot worse though. Most seem to be using the remembrance of someone they probably didn't know to cause more chaos all over kirkton on Halloween. There'll be 2 nights a year now kirkton is a no go area* unless the police actually do something about it.

*it's not actually that bad the rest of the year, especially during the day or at speed in a nice safe car
