and that was in March 2022.

Sturgeon today at FMQ basically calling whistle blowers liars and then mentioning unnecessary hospital admissions.  I would like to know who is admitted to hospital at this time when their admission is unnecessary.

She was talking about the time wasters who attend A&E. One on 10 were turned away by A&E lasy year because they turned up with minor ailments.

Says the guy who won’t answer questions himself.  Unsurprisingly hypocritical.

Patients should be charged for GP appointments and A&E visits to ease waits, Sajid Javid says | Politics News | Sky News

I wonder what protection there would be for the 'low paid' and where the threshold would even be drawn. I've no doubt they'd ;like to bring it in but I can imagine there would be a massive backlash.

As long as Javid and The Team use the same rationale for privatisation as they did for Royal Mail, and the train network, then everything will be just fine*.

Here we go again, cripple a system with financial cuts, watch as things get worse, attack the system as being 'unfit', punt the line that private capital will alleviate the problems. Pick your time to get your disgusting ideas maximum coverage. And so it begins.

* Disaster.

I don't know why it's never discussed but the open goal for making the NHS survive is creating a pharmaceutical agency to produce the drugs we use.

Currently the NHS is absolutely rinsed for simple things like Paracetamol it would be far cheaper to make our own. I'm not sure how it would work with more complex drugs, but even the simple stuff would surely make more sense than lining the pockets of American pharmaceuticals, it would also open up a whole load of new R&D jobs.

Paying to see your GP is quite common in many other countries including socialist ones.

I think it’s a good idea and would help to eliminate frivolous appointments. It would also help to engender a spirit of self help which is sadly lacking in the UK.

Quite right. People should pull up their socks and diagnose their own cancer.

If they really need an appointment they can jolly well turn their heating off and live off weetabix for a month first.

Am i getting the hang of this?

I'm not sure that's true, in England where they charge £9.35 per prescription they probably make a substantial profit.

Pressumably not everyone pays the prescription fees in England?

But a box of ibuprofen costs the NHS £3.74 in 2015 and according to the article the same thing in Asda would cost you 19p.

Obviously Asda don't make them themselves so it's pretty obvious the NHS is being shafted.

In total, prescribing four common painkillers - including paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin and codeine phosphate - cost the NHS £161,500,000 in 2015

They'll make a gross profit on most medicine, but there will be some where it's still in patent and the pharma companies will be gouging as much as they can. Remember they got caught colluding to inflate prices not long ago.  There will be some where there's hundreds of pounds spent on the drugs.

But whether or not it covers the cost of the medicine, i'd expect that a good chunk of the charge is spent on just administering the charge itself. Fairly sure that was an argument for it not being introduced here.

It's a fairly common theme that the admin required to get payments in or out of the NHS contributes hugely to inefficiencies. GPs spend as much time filling forms as seeing patients.
