101 Posted January 21, 2023 Share Posted January 21, 2023 I don't know why it's never discussed but the open goal for making the NHS survive is creating a pharmaceutical agency to produce the drugs we use. Currently the NHS is absolutely rinsed for simple things like Paracetamol it would be far cheaper to make our own. I'm not sure how it would work with more complex drugs, but even the simple stuff would surely make more sense than lining the pockets of American pharmaceuticals, it would also open up a whole load of new R&D jobs. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

People should pull up their socks and diagnose their own cancer. If they really need an appointment they can jolly well turn their heating off and live off weetabix for a month first. Pressumably not everyone pays the prescription fees in England? But a box of ibuprofen costs the NHS £3.74 in 2015 and according to the article the same thing in Asda would cost you 19p. Obviously Asda don't make them themselves so it's pretty obvious the NHS is being shafted. They'll make a gross profit on most medicine, but there will be some where it's still in patent and the pharma companies will be gouging as much as they can. Remember they got caught colluding to inflate prices not long ago. There will be some where there's hundreds of pounds spent on the drugs. But whether or not it covers the cost of the medicine, i'd expect that a good chunk of the charge is spent on just administering the charge itself. Fairly sure that was an argument for it not being introduced here. It's a fairly common theme that the admin required to get payments in or out of the NHS contributes hugely to inefficiencies.
