Albums of 2023

Been listening to the new Gorillaz album for a week now. Skinny Ape is an absolute cracker of a song, but the rest Is OK at best. Its middling pop/R&B music with dull featured artists. Going to the bother of getting Stevie Nicks on one track just to relegate her to backup singer. Bizarre. Just like the rest of the releases since Humanz onward, its not a fucking patch on Gorillaz, Demon Days or Plastic beach. Skinny Ape and Silent Running are good songs, Cracker Island and New Gold are decent and the rest are crap.

The deluxe version is much better than the regular release btw, couple of good songs that are better than some of the filler on the regular release, and a lovely House remix of New Gold.

New albums from Algiers and The Bohannons on my Apple Music list.  But first, the new one from Austin regulars The Stacks, Lay Me Down To Rest. Gorgeous power pop or whatever you want to call it.    RIYL Lee Bains, Richard Hawley, Spoon.

Friday was a cracking day for releases with boygenius, THS and the new pornographers all dropping albums. I'm really enjoying the Price of Progress, such an apt title for a sonic leap forward from a band on their ninth album.

It's good.

I love the national. Some of this is a bit national by numbers though. Still good, still has great moments, first song and Eucalyptus are both brilliant.

Feel like they're getting back to their post Boxer sound of High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me compared to the last two albums which were a bit more challenging on first few listens.

When Tropic Morning News first came out I thought it was exactly how I expected a song by The National in 2023 to sound. I'm quite happy for a more straight forward album after a few experimental ones. It all works, which is the main thing.

Lichen Slow - Rest Lurks

Silver Moths - Black Bay

Forgot to mention:

Daughter - Stereo Mind Game

One of my favourite albums of the year so far.

Demons by Brownbear is superb

Great shout. Saw him at Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine on Saturday night. Excellent live act although it was an acoustic show this time. St. Luke’s earlier this year with the full band was incredible. I think he’s playing a full band show in Edinburgh this Friday (?).

The new Bluebells album is also a cracker, right up there with ‘Sisters’ despite the 40 year gap.

Got a white label of the upcoming Gareth Sager (the Pop Group / Rip Rig & Panic)  LP a few months ago and that’s another beauty. Not sure when it’s due for release but we’ll worth looking out for.
