Isn't she the one they wouldn't let her retire because they needed her vote on some committee and her aides had to tell her to say "aye" ?

when a survey asked New Hampshire Democrats to describe Kennedy in one word, the top responses were “crazy,” “dangerous,” “insane,” “conspiracy,” and “unknown.”

Haha.

They wanted her to retire but she wouldn’t…she was repeatedly absent, stalling judicial nominee approvals…and, yes, she had to be told to vote aye instead of rambling on.

Why are there so many oldies in US politics?

I remember at the last election your Democrat front runners were Biden (late 70s), Sanders (80s) and spring chicken Warren, who was 70. This to face a mid-70s Donald Trump for the presidency.

Then in Congress you have Pelosi who is 83 and McConnell who is 81, and showing signs of age-related problems. Even with Feinstein's death there's another 90 year old in there.

What do they have against retiring?

You'd expect him to take more votes from Trumpy QAnon types than the Dems, so good luck to him. He's got Musk's backing so shouldn't be short of campaign financing.

It’s tragic.  As to the reason, unwilling to accept their own mortality?  Or, after being fawned over and feted for decades, unwilling to become an irrelevance?

Maybe the thought of not being in the limelight any more frightens them.

Maybe it’s similar to the likes of Mick Jagger or Billy Joel.

Money and power. Senators are vastly more powerful than Representatives, and the cost of a Senate campaign is now in the hundreds of millions.

2022 midterm Senate races raised $1.69 Billion in total…2018 midterm Senate races raised $1.3 Billion (adjusted to 2022 $)…2014 midterm Senate races raised $870 Million (adjusted to 2022 $). The top four 2022 Senate races (of 34) raised $500 Million alone. Given the ability to carry over campaign funds, and the fact that a Senate term is six years while the House term is two years, an incumbent Senator is quite possibly the most difficult electoral challenge.

A private individual, like Trump (or Ross Perot), has to have enormous wealth or connections to compete.

If RFK's candidacy lets Trump win the Presidency by splitting the anti-Trump vote, RFK should be exiled to Pluto.

It *shouldn't*. He polls about 60% favorability with GOP supporters vs 40% of Dems - f**k knows how, but he does. He's also scheduled to appear at CPAC later this month which should further sour him to anyone who isn't a swivel-eyed loon.

The Trump campaign is in turmoil because of RFK’s decision. They had been talking up RFK as a spoiler in the Democratic ranks, but RFK’s penchant for Conspiracy Theories makes him somewhat appealing to the looney Trump fringe. Now they face the problem of trying to reverse their previous quiet support and start peeling people away. The easy path is to disavow and debunk some of the conspiracy stuff, but that also threatens to pull some of the believers away from Trump because a lot of the people who buy into THOSE theories are batshit nuts. So Trump needs the loonies, but the loonies now have a loonier choice…and don’t forget some of the QAnon crowd think Trump is RFK Jr.’s brother while others expect JFK Jr. to suddenly appear and take over the Presidential run with Trump as his VP.

It's probably time for democracy to call it a day when one politician's bid for office is dependent on disillusioning his opponent's conspiracy nut followers, but not too much in case they don't believe his own conspiracy nonsense.

Oh f**k that, no, we're just getting started. We're merely circling the rim, I'm not going to see it flushed until a vote can be counted by going into a booth with cardboard cutouts of the candidates and having to rub your arse against the one you like best being the method of ballot.

(in a two-horse race, I would also accept farting on the one you don't like being valid in the vein of the guy who got his vote counted by writing 'not w**k' against his preferred option and 'w**k' on all the others - https://www.joe.co.uk/politics/voter-writes-wnk-all-over-ballot-paper-puts-not-wnk-next-to-greens-deemed-acceptable-as-a-vote-233070)

Latest polls all over the place, between +7 Trump and +5 Biden. When Harris replaces Biden, the D margin slims a bit, but anyone replacing Trump raises the D margins significantly. Haley polling worse than DeSantis, who’s trailing Trumps numbers significantly.

I think I saw that amongst Republican voters, Trump has a 20 point lead over all other Republican candidates combined. Madness.
