soon after a particularly  effective style of play emerges it becomes popular meaning teams have reason to prepare to counter it and plenty of opportunities to practice and get better at playing against it and it slowly becomes less effective and then less popular .

This West Ham side is genuinely dreadful at defending set pieces for a team filled with players well over six foot.
