I noticed the Tories were gleeful about her buying her house under Thatcher's Right to Buy scheme a while ago, which is the definition of the meme below, and is popular with the denser posters on the Politics board when someone turns out to have savings or a pension, yet still thinks rapacious capitalism might not be a good thing. They now seem to have added something on about her potentially owing up to £3,500 in Capital Gains Tax, which...the fact that they've robbed the country blind for years yet feel confident that this is a vote-winner for them is staggering, yet I can think of at least one person I know who'll be delighted that the hypocritical lefties have been exposed as doing something bad, and use it as an excuse to continue voting for the people who do the bad thing on a much grander scale. Right now one of the usual suspects will be reading this thread and preparing an "oh, I see it's OK when your beloved Marxist heroes do it!" response, deliberately ignoring the point that it's not OK when any of them do, but that it's wild when the biggest offenders make a show of moral outrage as though hypocrisy is somehow the worse crime. 5 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Oh, those days are long, long gone and, in fairness, they're quite open about it too. Anyone still voting Labour and expecting socialism isn't just naive, they're ignoring the explicit text. The idea of the Tories pointing that out is hilarious, and is presumably just their way of saying, "don't vote at all so we can get back in and be even worse". If the facts, as reported, are correct, she's made a gain on selling a house that she lived in at some point and moved out of over a period from 2010 to 2015 (min 48 months, max 72 months, depending on dates in each year). To get private residence relief the house needs to have been her only or main residence. That needs to be throughout the period of ownership, except for the last 18 months where it's deemed to apply, and you can also have a period of absence of up to three years where you can be deemed resident and can elect between properties for the relief to apply. If she got married and moved out on 31 Dec 2010, so long as she's made the election and not claimed relief on the husband's property, she could entirely legitimately claim relief in full on disposals up to 30 June 2015, without even having set foot in her own/old house. As far as i can see there's no allegation that she's also claimed for another property. Only that she had another residence. Not sure that moving the news agenda onto sensible tax mitigation arrangements is going to be an overall win for the Tories. The sum involved here is relatively trivial, and it will probably turn out that no rules/laws have actually been broken. However, one aim is to try to paint Rayner as a hypocrite for taking advantage of the scheme to make money, while supporting policies which would prevent anyone else being able to do the same. Are you objecting to her buying her home or claiming that it was her main residence for GT purposes?
