Arithmetic always stumped me, can't count, won't count. Oh well, I've nothing worth counting. And do you mean 'I' take it, or 'They' ? Your command of written English is almost on a par with my mastery of long division. Edited June 7 by kennie makevin
shizzlemanizzle
Three things. 1. What a horrendously named thread. 2. We’re absolutely 100% winning this tournament comfortably. 3. I love alcohol.

As duff as that looks, we’re not the worst. I thought it would be interesting to compare win percentages with similar sized European countries (sub 6 million pop) who had played 10 or more WC/EUROS matches in the same time frame you quoted. There’s no point comparing us with the Spains, Germanys etc. Croatia 42% Wales 38% Denmark 35% Norway 30% Slovakia 27% Scotland 22% N.Ireland 18% Rep Ireland 17% But can anyone spot why we’re the odd man out here?

Indeed. All those others have made progress in tournaments - in some cases, tremendous progress. Not us.

Are we the only one that hasn't got through to at least one second round? We've been really unlucky not to qualify at least once with our records in 74, 78, 82, 90, 92 and 96. (6 wins, 5 draws, 7 defeats). The worst thing is that to Zaire and New Zealand you can add Holland, CIS and Switzerland, all wins that at full-time we finished out of the tournament. In my lifetime (52 years) (eta... actually just looked up 1954 and 1958, let's just say all of history), the Sweden game at Italia 90 is the only win that really resulted in any great celebrations. (And the English wonder why we celebrated a nil-nil draw) Edited June 9 by allyo

It's true that they weren't wildly celebrated though, as wins were expected both times. Ultimately, however, neither win was hearty enough to get us through.
allyo
Yeah, i wasn't really clear. My point was that we had two wins against teams it was assumed we'd beat (first game in both instances?) and then three which culminated in elimination, therefore only one to really celebrate

allyo
So was the 0-0 at Wembley our finest ever moment in a tournament? I hope no one from England is reading this. Edited June 9 by allyo

Given how many tournaments we've played in, we really have had remarkably little to shout about whilst there. You obviously didn't include the tournaments we failed to win games at - the 50s ones as well as 86, 98 and 2020. Basically, in the competitions that allowed some 3rd place sides to get through, we made sure to lose at least 2 games.
allyo
It's like we've plotted to fail. Our records in 74, 78, 82 and 96 would easily have seen us through in other tournaments Edited June 9 by allyo

IIRC, after the defeat to Brazil in 1990, we needed five or six other results to go our way to qualify as one of the best third place sides. They all did, and we were heading through in injury time at the end of Uruguay v South Korea, before Uruguay scored and put us out of the second tournament in a row. b*****ds.

The Uruguay goal was a kick in the stones, but I don't think it came at the end of a sequence of loads of other things falling into place. Our record was also identical to Austria's, so we'd have wound up drawing lots if it had come to it.
