Just How Good Could It Get?

We could do a Greece 2004. End of discussion, really.

We could fantasise about absolutely obliterating everyone in the process, but I prefer to keep things within the realms of possibility.

This is much better. Bank account will disagree, mind you. Flights back and forward (plus tickets and accommodation) through the knockouts until we win it won’t be cheap.

Draw with Germany, but can only finish 2nd.

Beat Spain in the RO16 with some rock'n'roll direct football they can't deal with.

England in the quarters where they realise that Jordan Pickford, Lewis Dunk and Ezra Konsa is in fact just a lower half EPL defence and not an elite one, and Che Adams bags a double.

Semis v France a step too far.

Step aside ladies and gentlemen, this pathetic wee insular underachieving excuse for a country which has failed time and time again due to a lack of belief that our footballers are better than Germany's footballers, is about to be hauled up by it's Nicky tams by nothing more than the power of positive thinking. I believe. Get right into them !!!!

So in the "just how good can it get" thread your fantasy answer is an opening draw and 2nd in the group, beat England 'cos they aren't as good as they think they are, only to lose in the semis?  Truly the stuff that dreams are made of.

I was trying to be realistic tbh. I can genuinely see us reaching the Semis in that way if we turn up.

Narrow defeat to Germany, but outplay both Switzerland and Hungary to finish a comfortable second with 6 points.

We then run into an ageing Croatia side. Euro 2020 aside we are a bit of a bogey team for them, and we beat them on penalties to end their golden generation once and for all.

England are next in the quarters. Ralston channels his inner Steven O’Donnell and pockets Phil Foden, but this time Che Adams makes no mistake when we get our one golden chance. 1-0 Scotland. Southgate resigns in the post match interview.

Beaten comfortably by France in the semis but we come home with our heads held very high.

Are you ok ? Stay safe ! We must wrap you up in cotton wool. Your positivity is exactly what we need to make this country great 👍.

Scotland have a 100% penalty shootout win record.

If we get out the group this is no small thing. I think we have players with the character to execute their penalty under the toughest pressure.

Penalty shoot-outs by Euro winning teams since it expanded to 16 teams:

Four knock-out games:

Italy 2021: 2

Portugal 2016: 1

Three knock-out games:

Spain 2012: 1

Spain 2008: 1

Greece 2004: 0!

France 2000: 0 (but two Golden Goals)

Germany 1996: 1

All 5 pen takers from the Israel game (McGinn, McGregor, McTominay, Shankland and McLean) are in the squad this time. McGregor, McTominay and McLean netted penalties in Belgrade too (along with Leigh Griffiths and Oli McBurnie). Also Ryan Christie has scored a penalty for us against Republic of Ireland. Dykes who isn’t in the squad scored one in Vienna but missed at home to Israel.

Shankland and McLean are obvious penalty takers if it gets that far because you wouldn’t imagine they’ll have played the whole game. Of the other four guys mentioned, McTominay surely isn’t lasting 120 given his current fitness levels so maybe he sits it out.

We comfortably win the tournament, Scotland becomes independent on a wave of optimism, we rejoin the EU, everyone becomes millionaires on the back of rejoining the EU, UK Lite (or whatever they are called after they lose their cash cows) bump their gums about how well we are doing v how badly they are doing and rely on aid from Scotland.
