YAAAAAS!

Pole vault world record for Duplantis!

That was brilliant. As Johnson said, he breaks records when he wants. Β  You could just see him think, aw f**k it, why not.Β

Amazing to think that the Olympic Record was only 6.03 coming into tonight.

It's only the 3rd time a WR has been set in the men's pole vault at the Olympics - 1920 (4.09) and 1980 (5.78) were the previous occasions

Can someone explain to me the BBCs obsession with that Kelly Holmes gold medal?

There were a few elements to it.

She had been really close to global golds a few times and not quite made it. It had been 40 years since a British woman won gold (or indeed any medal) in the 800m, and she became only the 3rd woman, 4th athlete overall and first British athlete to do the 800m-1500m ath the Olympics.

There's definitely a strong case for her being the best ever female British track and field Olympian, and probably only behind Mo Farah overall

Also , she was super talented, but had a rake of injuries to contend with . Athens 2004 was her last major championship.Β

Yeah, she subsequently came out and admitted self harming and being diagnosed with clinical depression the year before winning the two golds.

It was an incredible achievement, even before you take all that into consideration

I should probably take off my Give Quiche a Chance t-shirt, but watching football at the Olympics has not shown it in a good light, unless I've missed better examples.Β  All kinds of sports with great examples of "normal" people doing extraordinary things and doing so with incredibly displays of sportsmanship.

Then you've got plain old 11s, with 22 people diving, bitching and moaning all over the pitch to play out for a medal that most of the high profile players involved probably don't even care that much about.Β  Morocco spent the last half hour or so of their match with Spain with some top quality shithousery.Β  France and Argentina couldn't get off the pitch without having a rammy.Β  Embarrassing compared to the rest of the sports we've seen.

Would definitely be up for them going the route of some of the other sports and introducing a niche version of the sport rather than the full.Β  Rugby 7s works brilliantly, the 3x3 basketball is great fun, so why not get 5s or 7s or something, or go the whole hog and have futsal instead?Β  Would be far more interesting than what we've got now.

We should defo have beach football and 5s or 7s instead. I'd prefer 7s personally.

There should be limits on who can be selected as well.

Only one player from any top division, no more than 2 from the same club, and no proper goalkeepers. Keepers rotate every 5 mins, or after conceding a goal

Or cuppy doubles?Β  Or whatever equivalent you had in your youth.Β  Get one of the independent athletes from naughty countries to go in goals.

Cuppy dubs, fancies and headers only.

I thought Steve Cram was going to explode like Mr Creosote when Hodgkinson won. In a later bulletin they thought it worth showing a picture Hodgkinson had shared of her celebrating with a Euro-winning 'Lioness'.

The BBC shamelessly treat TEAMGEEBEE as Greater England. Serves them right that so much of the time they're having to show rubbish sports like diving, gymnastics and three-and-in basketball.

Duplantis really is a phenomenon. It's 10 years since Renaud Lavillenie broke the record held by Sergey Bubka for 20 years that folk were beginning to think was unbreakable.Β

Since he first broke it to go to 6.17 metres in 2020, that's now the 9th time that Duplantis has literally raised the bar.

Watched the highlights during the night, and not a soul had left the stadium despite him having gold wrapped up long before, and all the other vaulters were willing him on too.
