The aerial shots suggest that might be a decent place to sit for 5 days with a few cans watching the cricket, don't they?

Never been there for the cricket but Galle and all of Sri Lanka are stunning.

Looked really nice in those Duran Duran videos in the early 80's

If he keeps this up, and given he is unlikely to be rested much, Joe Root might be on for 2000 Test runs in the calendar year, pretty sure that has never been done before. I remember Gooch getting 1000+ in the Test summer the year he got 333 vs India but can't recall any other batsman getting close to 2k in a year.

Mohammad Yousuf's 1788 runs in 2006 for Pakistan is the record. For England it's 1481 for Michael Vaughan in 2002. Root did 1477 in 2016.

Cheers for doing the research I couldn't be bothered to do, given Indian pitches tendency to be batsman friendly he could be in a very good position by the start of the summer.

With the expectation that Leech and Jimmy won't last very long, id be tempted for Root to have an 'injury' that prevents him fielding in the morning. Give him some time sitting on his backside rather than standing out in 30 degree heat again all day. His fielding has been superb and I'm not a massive fan of wk as captain but he needs a break

England with a target of 164 after Embuldeniya's 40 from 42 balls dragged Sri Lanka to 126 all out having been 78-8. Curiously, after all wickets fell to the seamers in the first Sri Lankan innings, all 10 went to spin second time round (4 each for Bess and Leach, 2 for Root). A tricky target though, don't expect it to be easy.

It was going fairly well, but it's now 85-3 with Root out, squeaky bum time for England.

This is actually an excellent all round performance from England.   Root has excelled as captain, and the bowling actually seems to be capable of bowling to a game plan.
Bowled well today, but the home team played some appalling shots.

50 for Sibley which was badly needed for him, 12 runs needed.
